I've posted ALL prices for ADL, BNE, MEL SYD - in addition to PER fares, if anyone is interested. It was all e-mailed Good Friday.
I've also posted condtions (Apr 7-Nov 30 flight dates, min 3 day, max 3 mth, nonrefundable except India) here:

    http://www.bargainconfidential.com/blog/?p=672

INCREDIBLE deals in a way - eastcoast prices are only very slightly more than PER! e.g. to Europe for ~$1400 incl. taxes! That's better than Virgin Atlantic's $1488 offer and you will likely find the MAS experience MUCH better than the Virgin one. MAS is trumpeting its economy success at the recent 2009 SkyTrax awards (but they pay SkyTrax for services, so it's a bit suss…).

Enjoy - and try to get a stopover in Kuala Lumpur. You will enjoy it!
    Cheers,
    Bizi

    • I already bought tickets with a saturday night stopover from 10pm to 2pm the next day.

What's some good places to go for a late night feed and then what can I do to kill time the next day?

And wheres the best location to stay for such a short stopover?

      Cheers

  • Doesnt look they charge credit card excess aswell. (Correct?)

  • +1

no credit card surcharge with MAS.

  • Does anyone know how much extra they charge to book by phone as I can't see how to book with a KL stopover using their online booking engine. Bargain fares !

  • -2

Dont know how Perth KL from 748 is any type of deal since I just booked it for 280 return with exit row seats. Different airline for sure but not 2.5x the price different.

    • -3

I've flown MAS and found the staff rude and the food inedible .
There are cheaper and better .

    • +1

uh, not everyone is flying just perth to KL… air asia doesnt even exist to us sydneysiders.

  • +3

It is unfair to compare MAS directly with Air Asia for longhaul flights:
    MAS has full-service airline features:

    • meals,
    • allocated seats,
    • flies to the main KUL airport, from all major/popular Aussie airports
    • frequent flyer miles and business/first seats on some longhaul routes

whereas LCCs like Air Asia charges extra fees for, or does not even offer these features:

    • meals not included (junk food snacks & drinks sold when I flew them)
    • seats on our flight were 'first come, first served'
    • Air Asia uses the KUL LCCT (a $15/20min taxi ride around the other side of the airport) quite a distance away (we connected from MAS at KUL to Air Asia at KUL LCCT after getting a spruiker's cab at twice the rate).
    • it's a LOT more stress at the airport and on the initial rush to grab a seat (and is usuallly packed) compared to full service airline etiquette

From unfortunate experiences with Jetstar, the main issue with LCCs is the risk of flight cancellations or major delays.

    • Real, full service airlines can put you on another airline's flight. - Fuggedaboudit on a LCC!

The comparison for 'full service' / high cost airports like SYD would be existing full service airlines.

There are plenty of sales (Singapore, Etihad etc) in addition to MAS and Virgin, so there are plenty of choices there.

I hope this info helps anyone considering flying from a non LCC-speccialist airport for LONGHAUL flights. Google for information - there are plenty of local and international forums for airline sales and offers.

I'm not an airline snob and have used LCCs for a lot of shorter haul flights, but not everyone should use LCCs - they are cheaper (sometimes, excl. sales) because a lot less is offered!

    Cheers,
    Bizi

AirAsia fly to Kuala Lumpur for around $230-$400.
I can't see how paying up to $500 extra is a deal.

    • +3

Malaysia airline can't be compared to AirAsia due to their provision of different inflight services.

      • -2

Pay $500 extra for some extra in-flight services?
        No-one is that stupid.

        • +1

You are still comparing apple and oranges.

Airasia regular SALE fares is $350-450 return from Mel to KL
MAS at the moment is $650 return from Mel to KL for full service. Not only that, but the sale period is a bigger window.

For MAS, this is a great rate.

        • I already purchased MAS tickets myself to vietnam for about 780 return. Compare this to a normal price for such an airfare in the past which is about 1200 + taxes and thats your 500 dollar saving right there. Im more than willing to pay an extra 500 bucks to get away from people like yourself whose goal in life is to brag about how much they saved but dont like to mention all the inconvenience they had to put up with (no food, drinks, air etc). But then again, my time is probably worth a lot more than yours…

Enjoy your LCC holidays in the future…you wont be seeing me beside you any time soon buddy.

for people comparing air asia to singapore/malaysia airlines - its not fair.
    i'll give you an example.
i have been trying to book a flight to malaysia for a while and i have tried on air asia specials.

on the time they had the "only pay taxes special", I could get return gold coast - KL for approx $150-$200 pp which was awesome. But the site was very busy and could not complete booking.

other than that, they averaged around $400-$600 return, lets say $500. I live in sydney, so return to GC is approx say $100-$120 (as I would have to time it so I dont have to spend a night in a hotel in GC or wait very long) so I am looking at say $650-$700 once I include baggage, credit card fee and some food. And that includes a stopover, and the risk of domestic flight being delayed etc. Does not include anything to keep me entertained either I believe.

For approx $100 extra - I get - no stopover, possibly better food with Sing Air / Malay Air and entertainment. Of these, the only one I really care about is - no stopover (time is money). So in this case, I think these fares are quite good

Low cost carriers definitely are great and have a place (I use them often, esp domestically) but I cant see how a negative can be given for this deal when it is fantastic, as was singapore airlines deal.

  • Europe flights are cheap but the Bali (Denpasar) prices????? They're far more expensive than some of the other deals released by competitor airlines recently. From memory, they're 200%+ more expensive.

  • +3

Rome fare is a bargain in itself.

How can you compare a Low Cost Carrier to a Full Cost Service?? Thats like saying a Business Class special is not a bargain because you could pick up an Economy Seat on the same route for a cheaper price.

  • +2

Agreed - these negatives are unreasonable. Just because it doesn't work for you, doesn't mean it's not a bargain for others elsewhere.

  • Ahh sorry.
    I revoke the neg.
I thought the prices were for ONE WAY travel as it wasn't stated in the title.

  • Guys, can anyone tell me if the $1383 return from Melbourne to London is a good deal?

I'm looking to travel some time in May but have just started to look in to buying a ticket. Can you do better than $1383 or is that the best deal at the moment?

    Thanks.

    • Not much better that that. think emirates or thai have the next best at around $1700

  • AFAIK $1383 is the best deal at the moment.
I really like KL as a city and KUL as an airport and recommend a stopover if you can manage it. It's a good place for OzBargainers - food is delicious and very cheap! Good shopping if the AUD is holding up. Malaysians I know love to do both shoppping and eating. :)

LOL to those giving neg feedback.
it's as simple as you are traveling to same place with 2 different cars.

one, you drive Benz, the other one you drive Hyundai.

    • +1

One person left negative feedback …….
Not sure what people are expecting on MAS , More leg room ? better service ? . It's the crappiest non el-cheapo airline I've ever been on . They definately don't compare to Singapore airlines or Quantas from my experience .
Your paying for more flexibility with tickets and that's the only upside for the extra dollars that I see . Which might be money well spent for some especially with all the strife in Thailand at the moment .

  • -1

This is a bargain website. If you enjoy spending your hard earned on in-flight service and driving a 'Benz' … goodluck to you - but as a bargain website, Yes - it is fair to compare these flights from a full service carrier to a LCC.

I have no problem carrying my own food on flight and my own I.T gadgets to keep me occupied as my 'in flight' service. I would do it on a full service carrier anyway !

This is what I paid for my trip to the UK later this year with a LCC

    Melb —> K.L - $96 AUD (Includes all taxes, 1 x in flight pre-ordered meal & 15kg check in luggage)
    K.L —> U.K (STN) - $248 AUD (Includes all taxes, 1 x in flight pre-ordered meal & 15kg check in luggage)
UK (STN) —> K.L - $248 AUD (Includes all taxes, 1x in flight pre-ordered meal & 15kg check in luggage)
    K.L —> Melb - $56 AUD (Includes all taxes, 1x in flight pre-ordered meal & 15kg check in luggage)

Total Return Fare Melbourne to UK - $648 AUD (Includes all taxes, in flight meals and checked in luggage)

    Malaysian Airlines = $1,384

Is it really going to cost me $736 to travel from U.K STN to london !

However: It pays to keep an eye on the full service airline sales. Malaysian airlines were selling a fare from K.L To Heathrow a few weeks back for $34 AUD + taxes = $212 AUD !!

    • +1

What, so full service airlines can not be eligible for bargains?

Right now MAS is offering some of the cheapest full service journeys for several routes. The MEL-KL route right now is CHEAPER then Airasia full price. Not only that, MEL to other cities in Malaysia is cheaper then buying a Mel-KL via Airasia and then purchasing a separate Airasia flight to that city (i.e, Melbourne to Penang is $666 return). You're being too narrow minded here.

      • -1

Of course full service airlines can have bargains - did you not read what I said ? (Malaysian airlines flight K.L —> Heathrow was $34 AUD ($212 AUD with taxes)… Yes that's a bargain !!)

$666 Melb —> Penang return is not a bargain.

My U.K trip was just one example. I fly out in 3 weeks Melb —> K.L for $310 AUD return - all taxes, meals & luggage included.

Why would I pay an extra $356 for a return flight from K.L to Penang on Malaysian Air 'full service' when you can get a return flight with Malaysian airlines LCC (Firefly) for $58 return -
total price Melb -> penang would be $368 AUD Return - $298 AUD Less !

        • What about those who are not in the cities that Air Asia fly out of such as sydney?

Sometimes the bargain is the convenience as well as the price.

Right now at this time these deals are bargains compared to what else is available. Im more inclined to book with Malay once than sleep out with the computer for some better deals.

        • $666 is the lowest MAS has ever offered, that in itself is a bargain. Your comparison is invalid since the time frame is different and the fact that $666 is for a FULL CONNECTING flight, not booking separate journeys with Airasia which means you are susceptible to cancellations and delayed flights. Compare what you can get with MAS and Airasia RIGHT NOW, not vs an Airasia fare from a sale many weeks/months ago.

    • Hi, can you tell me if there are any current similar deals to yours?

      I'd love to save $700.

      Thanks.

    • Where did you get this deal? Sounds way too cheap.

    • +1

I'd be interested to know how many families are able to get hold of a deal like that. Did they have to camp up at midnight in front of the computer for an hour to try to book those tickets? What was the availability of seats/dates, and for people like me the inconvenience/cost/time wasted in having to fly out of Sydney. Malaysian Airlines is regarded as one of the best airlines in the world. Can you say the same about Air Asia? I have no problem flying Air Asia and have done so in the past, but just because you got a zero fare flight shouldn't deem all else as expensive.

This is a bargain site, and this is a bargain.

  • -2

The whole concept of "full service" airline is a joke. Its the last piece of marketing non "discount" airlines are using to try to maintain outrageous markups.

When was the last time there was any "service" on a Qantas flight? A meal? Big deal. Ive been on all types of airlines planes and apart from the higher classes there is minimal difference.

Oh and Benz vs Hyundai? Cmon.

    • +1

The only joke is that you think the only thing that separates a full service airlines and LCC is the meal….

  • It is still true that Air Asia doesn't allocate seat numbers at check-in?
I get motion-sickness and don't eat anything anyway so I think Air Asia would be great for me.

    • +2

All AirAsia flights now have allocated seating provided upon check in.

Btw, There are a lot more things to consider when flying a full service airline and LCC. Therefore this sale is a bargain n the full service category.
