Need an extra car for a month

Hi there,

My sister in law and her two children are flying into Brisbane to visit for just over three weeks. She'll be joining my wife and I who also have two kids. All of the kids are still using car seats. I've currently got a Mazda wagon which obviously won't fit us all in. :)

So I've been thinking about my options to get us around. Now we don't all necessarily need to be out and about every day, but with four young kids at home I can't expect them to stay at home the whole time. Public transport and taxis are an option, but car is more convenient. (besides, a maxi taxi to and from somewhere will likely be more than car hire for a day!).

From what I've seen I could hire a small car for about $30 a day. Are there any other long term car rental options that you could suggest? I looked at places like rent a bomb but they don't seem that much cheaper than whats on offer from the big guys via vroomvroomvroom.

Would be a pain to hire a car for just the days we need to get out and do shopping, go on a trip etc, but I suppose we could do that if there's no better option and save a few $$$.

Would buying a second hand car for a month make any sense when stamp duty and incidentals will bite (not to mention interest the money could be making)?

Any other options you can think of?

Do you have access to a goget car near you? www.goget.com.au - good for just short term rental options that you could use on the days needed.

  • for trips to groceries taxi are cheap but not reliable you could wait 2 hours.

people on gumtree hire cars out cheap place an AD. maybe swap your car for a van.

bus is probably cheapest for local trips.
    depends where your going.

as far as interest on buying another car,get yourself some quotes and calculate it.

IM sure there is some sort of kids groups around your area especially on school breaks try your local neighborhood center.

  • This is quite an annoying problem. Last year I had visitors and tried all the car rental places to rent a van, including "rent a bomb" which was pretty useless (only one site had vans and they were not allowed out of metto area) and expensive $90/day.
We ended up renting from a Avis, booked through flight centre. It was still $100/day.I'll look at gumtree next time; might also possibly be worth checking the backpacker hostels? If you have a good mechanic (bwahaha lol) they might rent you one of their loan cars. (mine charges $20/day but it's a $1000 peice of crap).
Good luck pls update this thread with your outcome.
