  • i wonder what the quality of the hybrid bike is like

    • Well, it's cheap… :-)

From the limited information available, it doesn't appear to be better in quality than those you can get from Kmart, Big W and similar. It is a bit cheaper than those, so if that's what you're looking for, consider it.

If you want a $500+ bike though, keep looking elsewhere.

      • It seems to be bit better than the basic Kmart etc bikes. It has got Shimano grip shifts, while Kmart etc tends to use generic. The Tourney Rear Derailleur is fairly basic, but it looks to be the same ones as used on the low end Reid bikes.

For 130 and an excellent return policy, its a fairly low risk exercise, and it will probably be a good bike for short weekend rides or trips to the shop.

  • I'm interested in the hybrid bikes, so appreciate any feedback if it's a similar model to previous years?

  • What is a hybrid bike ? (half mountain/half speedster)

    • Pretty much.

    • flat handle bar, 700c wider wheels & road brakes

      • But in this case, it has a V brake rather than a Caliper.

        • oh you are right

        • Pretty common for hybrids to have V brakes, can't think of too many that have road brakes. Disk brakes are quite common though in higher specced/ priced models.

Thanks, OP, a new bike will go nicely with the pants I just ordered on Kickstarter! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cguzman/urbanist-cycling…

Hilarious - It looks like something from 'Funny or Die'…..except it's real.

      • I love that they offer a 'conservative' look and then just straight to a dirty lingerie look.

    • +1, just for the second 'Bettie' pic! I would sit behind that all day, even if it meant riding in a granny gear :D

I just bought the foldable bike last weekend from Aldi and its pretty crap to be brutally honest. Not only was it heavy and hard to fold, the chain jammed in between 1st gear and the plastic round part behind it within 5 minutes of riding it (and it was "Shimano gears" too). Took me over an hour to pull the chain back out since it was wedged too far in.

Probably wont recommend buying bikes from Aldi as a result of this experience.

like any flat-packed bicycle bought from anywhere, it's always ideal for a bike to undergo a basic service. I'm sure once derailleurs, brakes are adjusted and pivot points are oiled/greased, it would run pretty well.

Same will go for this bike

    • hey thanks,

I bought one too but haven't opened the box yet. Wonder if I should return it (hopefully be ok with their 60 day returns policy)

    • Sounds like the rear dur wasn't adjusted right, not really ALDI's fault.

I'm 100% sure this deal won't be a great quality bike either but for the price it could be good value for some.

    • To be honest - I am not very technical with bikes, but I was hoping that the product works out of the box so to speak. Obviously I followed the instruction manual to do the last bits of assembly - but I was very disappointed with the gears jamming within 5 minutes. I've had a few other flatpacked bikes before, and none of them ever had issues like this before.

Down vote me if you want - just talking about my experience here with these bikes and just not too good.

      • Everyones gotta understand a $100 bike out of the box is unlikely to work really well or possibly even be safe, anything can happen in transit. I'd expect a $5,000 bike to need gear adjustment post transit even if fully assembled.

Its really normal for gears to get stuck (top or bottom) if they aren't adjusted right. Its always a frustrating fault. You probably got negged because people felt its not Aldi's fault, if the frame snapped or the bearings seized on the first ride that would be another story.

  • Seems like a half decent bike for someone who wants to test the waters.

These hybrids make great commuters, the front suspension is a shame, Shimano 7 speed is very robust and handles poor alignment well. Pop on some slick tyres and you could have something that gets along pretty well for not so much money.

Put a Cannondale sticker on (http://www.ebay.com/bhp/cannondale-decals) and you might even get some cred :)

  • Riders of ozbargain: Is this a legitimate good buy? downsides?

It seems like ozbargain riders think this is quite a good buy.

I really don't want to spend anymore than $150-$200 on a bike, because I just want to try it out.

    • How will you use the bike chilli? commuting/ off road track???

      • commuting - back and forth to the gym. suburban roads, and bike paths.

i'm having second thoughts though, because roads are pretty dangerous for cyclists. and i'd risk a fine riding on the footpath.

  • If you are a beginner, I would recommend to start with a cheap bike and these aldi bikes are better than the southern stars from kmart and bigw. After a year, you can tell by how much you are using the bikes if you need to upgrade and buy a better bike. This is a more practical route than buying a good mid-level bike now that might end up in the garage gathering dust.

By the way, it is important that you get the correct frame size for your height. The catalog does not say what are the sizes of these bikes. Check the boxes if the frame sizes are specified. My height is 5 feet 5 inches and I am most comfortable in a size 17 inches frame. Medium frames usually are 17 to 19 inches frames and Large frames are usually size 21 inches and small frames are around 14-16 inches.
