Where to buy Prescription Sunglasses?

I see that the normal stores in malls are too expensive. The nice looking frames start from $150 and the same amount extra for adding prescription lenses.

Is there an alternative? Like buying from overseas etc?

  • oh - timing!

I usually buy my (clear lens) glasses from specsavers and havent re-purchased their sunnies for a few years now - they charged $100 extra for tinting and then another $150 for polarised lens - if youve ever used polarised, you'd never go back…

I got a offer from Specsavers today, expires Dec 1st - free tint and free polarised lens, so if you are with a health-fund, you may get them for $0, or a gap of about $29 for two pairs depending on your extras coverage.

You also get to try them on first being local. I dont think their range was great in the past, but looking at the flier they sent me, they've got more range and brands now. (not really fashion brands though).

    Hope that helps.

    • how did you receive the offer?

      • Direct snail mail.
Its not actually an exclusive offer - walk in and ask for it. I ordered 2 pairs of sunnies, polarised and tinted for no out of pockets.

  • Ditto ! Have also received the offer from specsavers & will be contacting shortly. As health funds allow new glasses every year, it would be silly not to take advantage of this offer.

  • Ditto! Finally got around to opening their 'junk mail' yesterday that had been sitting here for around a week, spotted that and went in and ordered 2 pairs. I paid $70 last time just to get one pair polarized.

  • http://www.zennioptical.com are the biggest and cheapest. I buy memory titaniums for $28.

  • Look on ebay for "eyeglasses" frames if you are after brand names or just google you will get all the online shops.
Zenni is excellen tmy hubby got a cheap pair of readers from them, but you will need you PD ( pupillary distance )from an optician though.
You also need to know the width and depth of the frames you are looking for unless its rimless of course, depending if they are for single vision or progressive.

My Hubby bought a pair of raybans for his everyday ones from ebay US, then sent to this place, we phoned them as well
http://www.4eyesoptical.com.au, from memory you get health rebates from then for the lens,he got multi progressives, with the transitions ( change with the brightness of the day) with all the extra little addons, glare proof, etc etc, for hundreds of dollars cheaper, We could not not reccomend this company any higher, they were excellent.
I think he sends them overseas but for the much cheaper price and the quality if the lens, who cares and that was 3 years ago, and no complaints

  • Thanks Guys for the great suggestions. Sites like zennioptical and 4eyesoptical was exactly what I was looking for. They are very reasonably priced. Does someone know what PD is? the prescription I got from my optometrist does not have PD in it.

    • Perhaps ring your optometrist and ask for it? Clearly Contacts' page does show a method of calculating it for yourself, but it's not really something I'd be taking chances with getting wrong, as the glasses you end up with will be useless to you if it is.

  • in my above post I mentioned PD which is pupillary distance.
you will have to go back to optometrist to ask for the pd as it where the pupils are measured as they appear in the frames.
One option is to buy your own frames and send them to 4 eyes optical, but get somone to acurately measure where your pupils are in the frames, with a marker, before you send them away for the script.

  • Was looking for the exact same thing! I also found this at 1001optical.
