Buy a console now? Or wait?

I'm not much of a gamer - don't usually have the time for it, but I'm severely tempted by GTA V and Fifa 14. I'm haven't properly played Fifa since 1999, and have been telling myself each year that I get the next one. And now that GTA is also out, I am thinking about ending my gaming hiatus.

These are the only two games I am really currently interested in. Therefore I suppose my options to go out and buy a PS3 or Xbox 360 (which are fairly cheap at the moment), or wait a few months for the next generation of consoles.

Questions:
- Are the Xbox One or the PS4 going to be backwards compatible?
- Any suggestion that GTA V will be developed for any of the upcoming consoles?
- When do games for the previous generation of consoles usually stop being produced? In other words, if I buy a PS3 or a Xbox 360 now, how (un)likely I'll be able to play Fifa 15 when that comes out?

Cheers.

    1) I don't think so (this could be researched on google quickly)
    2) I believe it will be developed for PC. It would be silly for them to not add PS4 / XB1 to the supported platforms as it's such a high profile and current game.
    3) I got a PS2 a few months after the PS3 came out. Games were still coming out, but the AAA titles all moved to the new platform.
    4) After PS4 / XB1 comes out, look for the price of the older consoles to fall through the floor.

I believe it will be developed for PC.

Nothing is announced. Even it if is this won't happen for a long time yet. And given their treatment of such ports won't look much different to the current version… so you have to ask could they really get away with releasing a game that looks like that on XB1/PS4?

Sure they could make it look better, but rockstar's history they will just make a new game instead.

    No.

Possible, but Rockstar tend not to do this. More likely they will just push GTA6.

Depends on the console. PS2 games where made for a LONG time after the PS3 came out. The problem is that the games are often bad ports. For example before the Wii U I know that even though the Wii still got a new FIFA game every year, all the features that were added to the PS3/360 versions were not added to the Wii, it just got a rebrand of the old version and sold again.

As to your problem, it is always better to wait financially. Even if you end up buying a PS3/360 they will be very cheap next year, and you never 'need' a gaming console. So it all comes down to the cost you want to pay for the entertainment. There are lots of great (and now cheap) games already released for PS3/360 that you can get good value from, but I wouldn't count on good valve titles in the future.

    • I think someone found reference to the PS4 in the GTA codebase - so probably a reasonable chance of that happening. No XBone reference were found.

To the op, the ideal is probably to wait till close to the release date of the PS4, then pick up a second hand PS3 at a cheap price (as every kid looks to free some capital to buy the new box). Then look to get a PS4 after the initial high prices have died down.

  • Thanks guys.
I am leaning towards getting either a PS3 or XB360. Will take your advise though, and wait until the price drops further upon the release of the PS4 and XB1.
I don't suppose there is a better option of the two? I was leaning towards the PS, but honestly, I don't know what the difference between the two are. I suppose the biggest difference is that the PS is blu-ray. Gaming and graphics wise, are they about equal?
Also, is there a go-to place to get the best deals with regards to consoles and games? Or do I just need to keep an eye out at the standard K-marts and Big-Ws?

    Cheers.

If you're not going to play very much, get the PS, you will thank yourself when you can play Fifa online for free.

      They are very similar.

      Reasons to get a PS3:
      - Some good exclusives
      - Free internet multiplayer
      - If you want to use it as a blu ray player

      Reasons to get a 360:
      - If your friends have one for multiplayer
      - If you want to play 360 exclusives

Also note that historically the PS2 was supported very well but the XBox was dropped like a rock. Can't say what will happen this time, but I don't trust MS to support the 360 a single day after the XB1 comes out.

        • That statement isn't worth much. 100 new games could all be generic downloadable platform games for all we know. You could easily read it as the servers will all be shut down in 2016 and nothing will work.

Still not saying that it will be a problem, but that article doesn't change much.

        • I don't trust MS to support the 360 a single day after the XB1 comes out

I think that whole article should alter your opinion at least a little…

  • OP just get a ps3… games are so cheap these days. even EB games and Jb hi fi have them selling at $20. otherwise ozgameshop, videoezy, blockbuster are really cheap (long ass shipping though). Since you havent games much the graphics will be just fine.
Playtation has free multiplayer and also has ps+.. look into it its a really good service where you get new games every month for your subscription.

  • If you're specifically interested in GTA V and FIFA 14 then just pick up a console now. And like others have mentioned… Go with the PS3. Blu-Ray player could come in handy and the free multiplayer aspect.

If you wanted a brand new console, EB Games is currently bundling a 500gb PS3 with FIFA 14 and GTA V for $399, which seems perfect for you.

    • Cheers Chux. Do I need 500gb?
If that came with 2 controllers, I think I'd be more on it :) Will be looking at the PS3.

      • Do I need 500gb?

No, but be careful about the 12. If you only ever play FIFA and GTA V this is fine, but as games need some space to install and many games have DLC that take up space the 12 is just not enough for much more than a couple of games without uninstalling/installing.

If you're not much of a gamer, and you're after a console for 2 games, my bet is your commitment to playing wont last 2 months before you have an un-used peripheral to your tv. As a non-gamer you could have just as much fun watching youtube videos of GTA5 as you would throwing away your evenings and weekends collecting a higher percentage completion mark on your saved game.

    • Saying I'm not much of a gamer, I not saying I don't play nor like playing. Just that I'm not as committed to the latest releases and so on. I usually play a bit on the PC, but thats getting old and knackered now anyways, and nothing has come out that makes me want to upgrade.
I'm only trying to say that FIFA and GTA are the only games I could see myself making time for.

I've played and completed GTA before (again, on PC), so I'm not a total newbie. But I'm also the kind of person who doesn't play enough to feel that they can warrant the term "n00b".

Just get GTA V and fifa for pc.

Just wait, gta V will be coming to pc..

Problem solved, no need to buy any consoles..

If you want controller support, then you can just buy a ps3/logitech/xbox controller etc..

There's software that supports ps3 controller for windows nowadays..

I wouldn't buy a ps3/x360 now, considering new consoles are on the horizon.

    • Seeing as it isn't ever announced for PC, it will be at least 6 months away, if it comes out at all. So this is the category of wait and see. Also:

I usually play a bit on the PC, but thats getting old and knackered now anyways, and nothing has come out that makes me want to upgrade.

You are talking about spending the money on PC hardware instead so there is no savings.
