Sony XPERIA Z1 or wait for Google Nexus 5

Both smartphones have Snapdragon 800 processor. Not sure whether to buy the Z1 now or wait until the Nexus 5 comes out

  • The nexus 5 will probably be cheaper so I'd wait. Other than that they are very similar

It depends on what will be important to you.. Based on the current rumors of the Nexus 5:

    Xperia Z1:
    + Better Screen
    + Waterproof
    + Better camera
+ Easier to find in stores

    Nexus 5:
    + The quickest updates
+ Sturdier construction (plastic back, not glass)
    + Cheaper

Other points to consider is the skinning of the OS.. I really like the Xperia skin and prefer it over stock, it also has some good features that stock Android doesn't have (ie Stamina Mode)

    • Better Screen

According to some user reports, the display can be of highly variable quality, since it's sourced from a number of different manufacturers. Just something to consider.

I think you're forgetting an important feature: Expandable microSD card slot on Z1

      • True, forgot about that, good perk.

    • According to The Verge review the screen is a clear step behind the competition:

"The Xperia Z1’s 5-inch display is a letdown… Doesn’t offer distinguishably better images than any of the leading competitors… Colors start washing out as soon as you tilt the phone away from you… Clear step behind the competition."

Also Z1 comes with outdated software; 4.2.2 instead of 4.3 which had a number of performance improvements. One being TRIM support, which in essence regulates the flash memory storage to increase NAND writing speeds. This helps to prevent your device from becoming sluggish over time.

Being a flagship however, it will receive a software update eventually, you'll just have to wait a while.

      • Colors start washing out as soon as you tilt the phone away from you…

That's what happens when you put TFT LCD screen into a high end phone. People expect AMOLED or IPS on a flagship device. Nevertheless looks like a pretty good review and a solid contender, at least for people who are sold on the 20mpx camera. But looks like it will lag behind in terms of OS updates (will probably be far behind when Kit Kat 4.4 arrives)

        • So apparently Android names their stuff in Alphabetical Order..
          Ice cream sandwich
          Jelly bean
          Kit Kat
          What's next for L? :)
          Lemonade/Lemon Sorbet/Lemon Meringue?
          Lime?
          Lollipop?

        • +1

          Lamingtons

        • Lemon Cheese Cake

  • There's more to it than just a processor.
The sony will be better built, water proof/dust proof, better camera and probably with a better screen/colour reproduction using the 'bravia' engine. do you think these features will be worth the extra cost to you?

If you prefer stock android straight out the box (I don't) the nexus might be worth checking out since it'll have the newest os on it.

You could wait for reviews or until you see one in person but I'm not sure when exactly it'll be released - supposedly this month.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd probably go with the Sony Z1.

But I think nexus will kill everyone with their aggressive pricing and don't think LG will make same mistake like last time (i.e. lack of stock)

If you even have to ask the question, my answer will always be to wait. It won't hurt.

  • Z1 3000mah battery
    N5 2300mah battery (rumoured)

    • Yes but the nexus has better optimised software. You can't assume the Z1 has better battery life.

  • Apparently the Nexus 5 has a small battery - will be nanoSIM + no microSD slot…

the Z1 will win if all the above seems true… will be cheaper (although the original Z got heavily discounted quickly) so depends on how much $$$ is a factor/how much you've budgeted i guess…

  • Telstra will retail the Z1 for $696RRP from late October

    Currently best prices are:
    Sony Melbourne: $720
    Exetel: $720
Optus: $769 - confirmed with DK31 dock inside the retail box($69AU RRP)

Not to forget you can claim via redemption the Sony NFC Speaker Ball valued at $79AU RRP. (Telstra pre-orders will get this included). First 3000 claims only from 5th October.

    • IIRC, Telstra also have it for $69 on the 'Small' $60 plan. A $9 handset repayment is actually pretty good, if you're planning on going with a Telstra contract.

  • Is there anywhere i can buy this outright in Brisbane anyone ?

  • Just got my z1 last week, walked into the Optus store in sydney westfield. Display seems to be good even at an angle, I don't see any of the issues reported over the net.

Got the DK31 dock with it works well enough. I'm on day 3 of the battery. Usage pattern daily is about 2 hours of listening to music in the train (1 hour each direction) and about 1 hour of playing games on my way back from work. Been playing the same mahjong game, so no 3d intensive gaming. Also the regular calls and messages and some light browsing in the evening over wifi. I disable data usage though.

No heat issues with the above usage. I did get it heating up to a almost cannot hold phone state over the weekend, not particularly sure what caused it since I had a lot of stuff running and launching games and apps all over. Gotta hate some of the apps that keeps running in the background..

Still waiting on bloody Sony to fix the issue with unlocking the bootloader, CGM is out for it but can't put it on unless I sacrifice/risk breaking the camera..

    • Thanks for the small review. How's the camera?

      • In terms of quality, its good as far as mobile cams go.. never gonna be better than a dedicated digital camera for now… unfortunately i'm no photo-phile, so can't give much opinion on the matter

A bit slow to launch though and I had the camera app crash on me once.

Well I heard the Z1 is waterproof.. :D
Dunk it in cold water for quick heat-relief?
