Getting screwed over by Coles fuel vouchers

Last couple of months iv been spending least $200-300 of shopping and I have been given offers like spend $130 and receive 40c per litre dockets, but right after just ONCE I spent $500+ I'm getting offers "Spend $210 and only get 30c per litre. Man thanks coles for scewing us over, does initially mean if u spend $10k in shopping fuel dockets gonna be like spend $1000 and get 30c a litre?

They are just encouraging you to spend more. I suspect if you lower your spending again, you will probably receive the former offers again.

go back to woolies for a month and watch ur offers improve to "spend $50 for 30cents off"

i never shop at coles, but have a card with them and get great offers!

Don't you already know that's the way they game you?

The way I look at it, the more you spend the more vouchers or discount you should get, not increase it's spending rate and having less advantages, these companies wouldn't even exist without us, it's a disgrace for a multi million dollar campany to market their strategy this way.

My theory is that it's "the more you spend, the less rewards you get". I have a separate flybuys account to my partner. We did this so that we could get more targeted offers and have those offers targeted closer to our regular spending pattern.

Before we set this up and only had the one account, we were getting offers for $130+ for fuel vouchers and 500 bonus points. Once we started having the two accounts and coles looked at the lower spending rates on each account we were getting offers targeted at $50-$70 for vouchers and bonus points. I find that if we don't spend anything on one of the cards for a few weeks the offer targets go down.

The value of the fuel vouchers offered to everyone goes up and down depending on flybuys/coles policy and needs at any given time. The values aren't consistent with spending pattern. The lowest target I have seen for a fuel voucher was $40 but the value of the voucher was the same as an offer during the same week for someone who spent over $100 per week. Flybuys may possibly also look at how often the card is used when it decides how high a fuel voucher or bonus points to target you at.

Trick coles/flybuys into thinking you are actually spending less than you are. Work out whether you want base points or bonus points or regular fuel vouchers or high value fuel vouchers. You may have to give up some base points in order to get better targeted offers for bonus points or high fuel vouchers. It would also involve splitting your shopping into two transactions, one where you scan your flybuys card and one where you don't scan the card.

If there are two adult members in the household, have two flybuys accounts. Use two separate email addresses and be really careful which flybuys card you use each week.

Flybuys tend to look at the highest amount you spend rather than the average across all the weeks. When my offers were targeted at $100-$130 I was stocking up for two or three weeks and only making small transactions in the other weeks. I wanted my shopping totals over $100 so I could use the Tell Coles vouchers(now I take the points). The other tactic we picked up was to try to keep spending consistent across all the weeks and this can lead to more consistency in targeted offers.

  • I go the Woolies card route so dribble a few buys there every now and then and "hey presto" a "special offer for me" to spend $30 at each of 3 (Woolies, Big W, BWS) and get 100-300 Qantas FF points. Then nothing for a few months and repeat.
Ride a M/bike so petrol prices aren't a big deal. Local IGA / Farmer Jacks / Spud Shed usually cheaper anyway. Prefer to save $3 on weekly shopping than drive an extra 5km (1/2 a litre) plus 1/2 an hour just to save 8 - 10 bucks on fuel
