Gaming Laptop

My friend is going to start working away from home and wants to get a gaming laptop. He wants something with great specs. I suggested a clevo, this one for example. He seems pretty happy with something along these lines, but the bargain hunter in me seems to think I can get something as good for cheaper. Any suggestions? He will be playing dota 2 almost exclusively, but the machine should be somewhat future proof, ie, new MMORPG's.

  • I am not a gamer and have been considering getting a gaming laptop for couple of weeks. From my research, I do not think you will get any better value for money laptops than clevo (and Horize) laptops. The best Clevo laptop at the moment, in my opinion, is the Metabox P157SM since there are free HDD upgrades.

Good luck with the hunt and please share if you do find something else.

    • The one you linked is $400 more but the SSD and 8GB RAM could be bought for <$200 from MSY.
With the W650SR you do get a Blu-ray reader and wireless card upgrade.
So the HDD upgrades almost cancel the each other out.
Need to ask yourself if a better GPU (750M vs. 765M) and backlit keyboard are worth $400.

      • +1

        better GPU (750M vs. 765M)

This is absolutely critical and the whole point of the machine. Don't dismiss it so easily.

      • that's why I said in my opinion. :)

    • I do like the look of that more - however now that I have shown him one for ~$1400 I doubt he will be likely to go up in price. I was thinking more along the lines of Asus R552JV-CN195H from MSY. Cheaper once you add windows and postage.

      • The Asus machine looks quite decent. Following what Bruce said, you might want to check the benchmark of the graphics card. I consider SSD to be essential, especially if you want it to be somewhat future-proof.

  • Linked the wrong clevo, here is the one I meant so essentially this IS the same as the one yhakong linked without the SSD
