eBay sale without PayPal - refunds? Where do I stand.

Hi everyone,

I made a rookie error recently.

Bought an item off eBay, worth around $205 with delivery.

The seller has 96% feedback, 2 negatives in last 12 months with postage charge being the reason for the negs..

They offered a 7 day return as well.

I have sent multiple emails now, regarding a return, but the responses have stopped.

The issue is this one time I decided to pay by bank deposit, instead of PayPal…

I have filed a dispute with eBay, but what are my chances getting $$ back? We both are with Commonwealth Bank.

Am I boned?
Can the bank help?

Thanks everyone.

  • How many feedbacks did he have ? what was the last day he sold something?

    • Score of 78, 60 items in last 22 months, 17 in 6 months and another item for October, it's a consistant buyer/seller.

  • Check for his phone number from "ebay seller information" and call him. Then you can file a report…
If he wanted to cheat, he would have sold more items and then run. He has enough score to be easily tracable.

You say all that, but haven't posted the problem. What's there to hide? You'll receive more feedback if you said the problem.

    • Oh, of course.

It was a cordless phone, but the keypad does not work..

  • Bank will not be able to help. eBay will give you the person's contact number & address, and you can try reach him. But I think, in the worst instance that the seller does not actually give valid phone no or address you are pretty much stuck with it.

You can try pursue him to the court, but that will be costly and probably is not worth your energy.

Btw, how long have you been trying to contact them? Does the eBay seller still have item for sale? Any further info about their store - sometimes you can see if they are a store or just a private seller. If its a store then you have better chance.

    • no ebay store, i bought the item via bidding and winning the auction. i've dug as deep as possible to find any information about the seller..

looks like Paypal only in future. not worth the risk to save someone else a couple $$

I have not had a response in 5 days. where-as before the issue, responses were pretty close to instant.

I'm assuming you have already left feedback?

      You would assume wrong.

Rookie error. Boned. The only light is the neg feedback you can leave to save someone else from the seller.

  • Just so you don't feel too bad … just because it (the phone) doesn't work, doesn't mean paypal would have helped either. Paypal tends to side with the seller because it is the sellers that provide their fees (and those of Ebay).

I bought something on Ebay that I had to get delivered because it was a huge, heavy sideboard. The person selling it said it was in perfect condition. People had asked questions and the seller had answered. The seller had said that a mark you could see on it (in ebay picture) was an old sticker mark that would come off. I bought it for the "perfect second hand condition" price as described by seller, via auction.

The bottom of one side was completely smashed up and broken (not visible in any pics). The seller said that it happened during (my) transport (my transport being my partner btw), but it was full of old, yellowed glue. One the door hinges had been torn off, and had destroyed the timber where the hinge went. And the mark … about a 15cm diameter circle right on the front, was where someone had completely destroyed the surface of the polyurethane coating. The seller was a total liar.

I offered the pictures I had taken, but Paypal never even asked to see them to bother proving my position and simply closed the dispute in the sellers favour.

    • Did you try and dispute it with eBay first?
I had a problem once and eBay mediated and they read the history of correspondence before weighing in.

My situation was the seller listed a used item as new. I had to return the item and the seller returned the money (they actually did it willingly though through the mediation process)

I think you need to dispute with try and settle the matter with eBay before putting a Paypal dispute. I may be wrong but that's my experience.

Usually a SNAD (significantly not as described) dispute on eBay goes the buyer's way. It's actually the buyer eBay is really competing for and wants to keep happy - buyers often have a plenty of alternative places to purchase from, whereas eBay's dominance makes it costly for the seller to switch to one of the few alternatives, so eBay can safely treat them like dirt :)

  • Contact the manufacturer, can you make a claim from them as item faulty?

    • item was 2nd hand, but said clearly in the listing it was working fine.

      • Possibly ruined during postage?

        • The seller packed the item well. It seems like everything was genuine, until this issue arose. Now no communication.

What kind of second hand cordless phone is $205?

        • Bloody oath!

        • Heh, its crazy huh.. I do a little Buy/Sell on ebay with some high end gear. i bought this cheap, believe it or not.. i was planning to resell for $300~ well.. was planning to

          @berger:

Now that's a d move. Get what you pay for and serves you right. Pretty low really. Brodenlike even. Could tell from your inflammatory post on my thread you were this sort.

    what was the item?

  • eBay has buyer protection so you should get your money back

    • paypal has buyer protection

    You either win or lose.

      lol good one captain obvious.

  • go here, this will give you the sellers contact no. and address.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/ebayadvsearch?_sofindtype=9

  • Tell the seller you'll bring the phone to his address so you can both work out what's wrong with it and he can give you a refund.

    Most sellers will get scared.

    • He will know it's a bluff and how is one to obtain these details anyway?

  • Never pay in bank deposit unless you have no other options even for high reputatble feedback sellers…

    That's a given.
