Looking for a good hair clipper, trimmer

Maybe Walh?
Internet or in stores. Thanks

  • I grabbed one from Aldi them is the same as the Walh brand. Were only a few left in their Maroubra store (NSW) but they were on special @ $13. Plugs into the power, so pretty powerful. I wouldn't recommend cheaper rechargeable because they can be quite weak/inconsistent.

  • take a look at some online stores that can be trusted. i usually do my shopping at poshmoda

  • I bought the Wahl one off eBay. I paid the extra for the cordless one so I didn't have to be near a powerpoint or run an extension cord out into the backyard - so I don't have to clean up the mess ;) Love it. Was around $50 or $60 and will pay for itself in 3 uses (1 more use and I've broken even).

  • I bought a Wahlberg from Cost of last year for 42.00

  • +1

Sorry to contradict ycon… But an Aldi clipper is not even in the same ballpark as Wahl. Get the correct Wahl model, and you'll be buying the same as barbers use day in day out - for years.

The OP may like to have a read here:

And yes, it's still going strong. Oh - and you can find clips on youtube on how to clipper cut.

    • this is really useful. thanks

      • I don't know if I mentioned this in that other thread, but I oil before giving each haircut - not after, so it's ready for the next haircut a couple of months away. I tend to think the oil must dry out. So I oil just before, to prolong blade life.

        • Which oil do you use?

        • they normally come with a small bottle when you buy.. It is small but dont need much and should last a long time, Just make sure the lids on properly or you end up like me slippen n sliding when cutting hair…

          also +1 walh…

At one stage I was buying the $10-$20 ones from BIG W and as such, But honestly I would throw them out after each use, But I figgured no difference than getting a barber to shave it…

When I took our dog clippers to get sharpened, I was told that you shouldn't use oil prior to cutting as it simply helps to accumulate extra dirt and gunk on the blades. He said instead to use blade wash during use. It helps to keep the blades cool as well as clean.

        • Sorry, my computer crashed and I've only just got back online.

I bought a 2oz/59.15ml bottle of Wahl oil from the same online store when I bought the clipper. http://www.myhaircare.com.au/Wahl_Clipper_Oil_1300.html - It was only a couple of $ cheaper than buying at the stores you see in shopping centres with "hair" in their title, though.

Those stores also sell a "clean & oil" in an aerosol spray can that I forget the name of. I was almost certain it would work out more expensive and run out quicker, so I never tried it.

We also purchased a… er… wahl "ladies" clipper at the same time. So we have two of the small bottles of oil that come with the clippers. It's been ages but we're still using those and haven't needed to open the larger bottle yet.

    • Ok valid point. I should have stated that it only 'looks' identical to the Wahl model (minus branding)

  • Wahl. Also, for the best quality, go for USA made (rather than China made) as they are sturdier. They (the metal clipper) don't break if accidentally dropped while cleaning. I've dropped mine a few times while oiling, cleaning and they are still good. No breaks, no dents. very happy with it.

  • If you are cutting your own hair…

    http://www.usa.philips.com/c/hair-clippers/headgroom-easy-re…

    http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Norelco-QC5580-Do-It-Yourself-…

Aren't bad…. they have a rotating head, so you can cut your hair like you are using a hairbrush.
Probably best for short hair…. I've had one for years….

If you have someone to cut hair for you…. then the Wahl are very good

  • Harvey Norman sold a Wahl 20-piece set hair clipper for $1 if you buy a cordless men's shaver (minimum around $26). I bought them online.

  • Harvey Norman have the Wahl 20-Piece professional (or precision) model for $19.00.

I've used it once and it seems very solid.

I just bought one, as the Aldi one was complete rubbish (would jam/bang extremely loud when cutting)…

    • As mentioned in the other thread, the price difference reflects the quality of the internal motor. I exchanged many emails with the Wahl rep for Australia before making my purchase. The most important info boils down to this (mostly taken from the other thread):

The "Professional" model has the "lesser quality" motor. Also be aware you cannot run clippers purchased from the USA in Australia. Stepping the voltage down doesn't help - it's the mains frequency that matters. Here we have 50Hz mains. There they have 60Hz (I think). So the motor cannot vibrate correctly (and won't cut hair). The "hair" shops in shopping centres mostly sell the "Colour Pro" model, that has multicoloured guide combs. It also has the cheaper motor.

The place I purchased ours was: www.myhaircare.com.au - specifically, this: http://www.myhaircare.com.au/Designer_Clipper_1280.html - they had the cheapest price I could find online (at the time). I paid $109.95 in Feb 2011. It is currently $122.40 - but the owner told me back then he regularly has it on sale, plus free shipping. He was pretty open with that info. So just email him and ask if he still has "the regular free shipping offer on the Wahl Designer" and when it's on sale next.

The Designer has guide combs that are all black, and is only supposed to be sold to "professionals" (barbers/hairdressers). I was told they get around this Wahl requirement by specifically importing the Designer which is not normally sold here - because many people were asking for the better quality motor.

So you can buy cheap and save money (and maybe need to buy again in a couple/few years), or you can buy the one the hairdressing industry buys. (The outer case is different, but the internals and blades are the same.)

  • Good price with the free trimmer, but people might want to check with them first what they're actually selling. Their description states it has a chrome case but the photo shows the plain grey case. To add to the confusion they're also selling the chrome alone for $229. It's likely they've cut & pasted the chrome's description into the grey model's page by mistake. It tend to think it's the plain grey in the deal, just like in the photo.

I just noticed the same kit is available on ebay slightly cheaper at $97.95
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/like/370962721683

… Or Sydney Salon Supplies is selling the chrome for $97.95, blue for $99.95, or purple for $109.95 without the free trimmer - on ebay.

    Just be sure:

    1. To get the DESIGNER because there are other similar models with a lesser quality motor.

    2. Don't buy from the USA. Not only do they sometimes have the "wrong" blades fitted but USA units will NOT work here due to being setup at the factory to run on a different mains frequency.
