I was offered an UBER promotion

I exploited the UBER deal previously where you get 2 x $30 free rides and now I've been offered another freebie.

Hey cheapskate [name changed for anonymity],
I noticed you’ve taken uberTAXI but haven't yet tried our other options, so I'd like to offer you a FREE ride on UberBLACK or UberLUX!
Take an UberBLACK or UberLUX ride by November 15th
and your ride will be FREE up to $50.

UberBLACK is our classy hire car option (Caprices, Audis and Mercedes unmarked HC plate cars), an alternative to TAXI that comes in at just 20-30% more than a Sydney taxi.

Try it when it's hard to find a taxi or when you just want to show off a little! All you'll need to do is slide the button at the bottom of the Uber app to BLACK when you're ready to request your ride, the discount will automatically apply to the next ride you take.
Ride on,

Oscar from Uber Sydney

I generally avoid taxis altogether and I can't imagine any other OzBargainer taking one regularly but the deal is quite impressive. When he offered to drive the remainder of my journey for an estimated $80 I had to confess to the taxi driver that I'm a cheapskate and that I usually avoid paying for Sydney Buses let alone taxis…

I need to get to the Airport early in the morning next week (for my $20 return flight to Alice Springs thanks to OzBargain) so I'm not optimistic of my chances of actually getting a black taxi to exploit the deal or using it in emergencies. For the record it was hard enough getting a regular taxi with the deal last time and I had to keep refreshing the taxi request. The taxi driver told me that during the introductory period they get a bonus $5 as an incentive to use the service.

One of the best and worst features of Uber right now is that you can't select a destination and it's up to the taxi driver to decide if it's worth driving 20 minutes to pick you up. This means a taxi won't avoid you if you're just going just down the road for bingo at the RSL club but it also makes taxi drivers hesitant to use the service when there are alternatives.

I also believe without clearing the app's cache you can't order another taxi without leaving a star rating.

It seemed a bit buggy to me as well. I requested a taxi and couldn't get one so started walking toward the bus stop so I wouldn't be late. When I requested another down the road it based my request on the previous location and had to run back. I may have stuffed up though.

  • Hey,

Have you used your free ride? I notice that they display the code on the Promotions tab if you haven't used it, and you can pretty much use it on other accounts.

I hope you can share the code :)

    Cheers!

    Hi

From memory I checked the promotions tab and nothing came up for this deal. Luckily everything turned out OK and I traveled home in style in free. The driver told me tonnes of people were using the same offer so I was slightly relieved when he began driving. Unusually, black taxis aren't obligated to have a meter it seems? I wanted to know when it hit $50 so I knew when it was time to jump out :)

It sucks that I can't open my app at home since it needs to find the location via GPS to stay open?! And it also sucks that there's no one to talk to when things go wrong or to know if you've received a spoofed e-mail…

With the amount of investment they're getting I expected a lot of little things to be a lot better. Getting the most basic of information on-line is not user-friendly at all. It's a feat accessing basic documentation let alone terms and conditions. It's like they intentionally want to portray the image they're a resource-deficient start-up…

But I thank Uber for the most expensive freebie total received from a company to date ($110…and counting…).
