Gaming Headset on the cheap. Suggestions?

I'm looking at getting a replacement for my headset (I have turtle beach x31's that I use on my PC). They work fine but I want a wired so I don't need to worry about the batteries dying at important moments.

I have a rather large head so they can't be too tight. I also heat up pretty quick so it would be better if they didn't act like a furnace for my ears. I'm not overly concerned with sound quality (or mic quality) they just need to be reasonably clear.

I have a tentative budget of around $70 but obviously (this is ozbargain!) less is better, but I'll go over if I have to.

I'm just after some suggestions as I don't really know what I'm looking for, I've looked at most of the big (gaming) companies such as steelseries, razer, logitech, etc and nothing really sticks out.

I'm in WA btw so factor that into postage from the east as required.

Thanks in advance.

  • I bought a pair of Audio Technica AD700s for both media and gaming. They're super light considering the size, excellent sound quality, and open so they don't heat up as much as other headphones. From what I've read on some sites, it seems like it's worth investing in a good pair of stereo headphones rather than buying 5.1 cans, but I guess it comes down to personal preference. I've got the Roccat Kaves as well, and the AD700s are much nicer overall, even for gaming. You can get them for just over $100 at some places, I think.

    • I have the $20 pair of AT from COTD which I use for movies and when playing single person games late at night and can't use the speakers. The headset needs to have a mic, and the AD700's are a bit out of my price range. I would prefer stereo over 5.1 as the only good reviews I can see on 5.1's (or 7.1's) are the plantronics 7.1 which are wayy too much. I'm looking at the razer kraken pro from msy which seem to have decent reviews on amazon/newegg.

    • Agreed. Investing in good stereo headphones are much better than virtual or physical 5.1/7.1 headsets.

Gaming headsets tend to have poor quality sound (relative to good music headphones), but that's expected and why they're cheap.

So yeh if you're price range is low, just go for whatever you want. They're all prety much the same in that price range. Anything better will be too expensive and tend not to have a mic anyway.

Let us know what you got, and how it is. :)

  • Ended up getting Logitech g430's. Looked at all the review in my price range on newegg/amazon and had it narrowed down to razer kraken pros, which I would have needed to get a splitter because apparently the come like a phone headset with the mic inline with the headphone. The other choice was the plantronics 780 which my friend has and wasn't overwhelmed by, and I tried on and they would get hot in my room fast. The logitech g430s ticked all the right boxes in the end and they are comfy with my giant head.
