Anyone updated to Windows 8.1?

It was supposed to be 10PM Australia time but I have not seen the update in Windows Store. Has anyone been able to update as of this writing?

I checked the Windows Store as well and I can't find a prompt for me to update it.

I opened the store just then and it was available for download. Maybe they limit the availability?

      • Downloading it now

    • I checked now and it appeared. out of nowhere.

  • Can't find it.

It's the red circle button on the top left of your window.

  • did a test install

    works the same

Faster, better thread scheduling, DX 11.2, Metro improvements. OBVIOUSLY. Updating 2 PC's, 1 laptop and 1 tablet to 8.1.

change your region to united states and reopen store, then you will see the "update to 8.1 for free" pane. while it's downloading you can switch back the region again

    • I didn't have to do that, although my region was set to Japan.

  • Just upgraded, and found that it breaks Start is Back. So you'll have to install a new version tailored specifically for 8.1.

Also looks like it forces you to go online during the setup process, you can't use an off-line account.

    • Not true. You can use an offline account with a bit of clever thinking, the easiest way being to disable your network connection at that point of setup.

  • No update yet at windows store as of 1200 awst. Tried installing KB something something but still cant see update. Must be the version of my win 8???

Just installed it and I prefer to not have the start button. The functionality it provides doesn't really warrant having the button as they things I would not use regularly.

Anyway to hide or remove this start button?

      Yeap, Install "Start is Gone"!

lol the irony. "give me back start!… why'd you give me back start!! way better without"

just to clarify I always thought that the missing start button was really a problem, althoough it did seem to upset many

    • Not sure why you got negged, it was a valid question. Balance restored.

    • I thought it was pretty redundant too, but now I have a touchscreen monitor which doesn't have a bezel that I can used to swipe in from so the Start button is very helpful.

    Downloading now using this solution

And that KB something 379 is the culprit. It needs to be installed before you can see the update in the Store.

  • Did anyone lose any apps or programs due to compatibility issues?

    • Yes, not a happy upgrade. Now I either re-install Win 8.0 or wait for some of my apps to be updated…

  • I have updated it and now got an error when I am downloading store app. I have logged in with my outlook.com user account. A great disappointment. My windows firewall control no longer works. My Fence 2 no longer work. What a headache.

This probably sounds silly, but since I have updated to 8.1 all my google search results are exactly 1 word wide. This only happens with google in Internet explorer, not a problem in Firefox. No other sites seem to have a problem. Anyone else had this issue? Any one know a fix? I have tried searching for a solution.

EDIT: Solved - settings, compatibility view settings, unchecking box "Use Microsoft compatibility list"

  • haha for all you Nokia and Windows Phone OS fans, too many 'technical problems'!

  • Is it me or does everything seem like its not smooth. Like its fast but is feels rigid and straight instead of smooth and gliding.

A few of my games won't work, portal 2 and saints row 3 for example. I've updated catalyst control centre but still nothing. Thankfully dota 2 works :\

    • I can't get Battlefield 3 to work either. Keeps crashing with DirectX error.

      • ah really I was worried about this, was holding me back from updating as well

Love 8.1; one of my favourite features is setting the launcher background as transparent (to use your desktop wallpaper), makes the Start menu feel like it's floating.

    • good, you do that inside windows settings or with a third party software?

      • +2

        No inside Windows itself :)

        1. Hit the "Windows Key"
        2. Open the "Charms" bar (or press Windows Key + C)
        3. Personalize
        4. Select the bottom right option for the backgrounds (it should be your desktop wallpaper)

        :)

  • I'm glad I did a image before upgrading I went back to windows 8 as windows 8.1 had too many crashes, mini freezing, programs not working and not keeping activation or registration information.

  • Does the update "stream in"— as in, not able to burn the download to install, later, offline? Or, does it exist as a burnable temp file?

    Cheers!

  • I have the Windows 8.1 Preview installed at the moment, have to re-install all apps after upgrading to the final release of Windows 8.1, not sure if I can be bothered at the moment..

  • Updated through the windows store but I would update your video card drivers first before updating as My existing driver was not compatible but after updating the driver in safe mode it's all good now.

  • I updated. i infact bought an upgrade after hearing good things about windows 8.1.

didnt get chance to use it much though. Whats new from a normal user's point of view. anyone knows how to bring back startmenu as i am still using start8.

    Thanks.

    • I use this free one, no complaints at all. Compatible with 8.1

    • When you're on desktop, the windows start icon returns to the bottom left hand corner. Clicking it will bring you to the metro start screen.

  • I am sure there are a few N36L, N40L and N54L owners out there, as it is quite a popular little 'server' on OzBargain.

After a few attempts at getting past the "Getting my devices ready" stage of the Windows 8.1 update it appears that the issues surrounding the BroadComm NIC have still not been resolved since the Server 2012 R2 update and 8.1 preview.

As such, I am under the impression that the NIC driver is the culprit preventing an update to 8.1 and that the only workaround is to install a new NIC or disable the driver, update and live without it.

Has any else had a similar experience with the above models?

Oh god metro Skype. pulls hair out

    Windows 7 FTW..

    • I too haven't found much reason to update my OS.

I actually don't mind 8.1. The very first thing I did on my W8 build was to install Classic Shell, but now I've uninstalled it and gotten very accustomed to the Win + Q hotkeys to find all my programs (don't like desktop shortcuts).

  • I have just discovered another issue with Windows 8.1. It doesn't play nice with Realtek LAN controllers, and my computer also doesn't wake from sleep — as soon as it comes out of lower power state or out of hibernation, it reboots.

    • This new hardware? My Realtek NIC has brand new WHQL drivers and zero other issues.
