Need a 500GB, 5400rpm NAS drive to match what I have

A few years ago, I bought the Linksys Mediahub NMH405 which came with one 500GB, 5400rpm WD Green drive. I now want to set it up with a 2nd drive, mirrored.

The trouble? I waited too long. Now there are no longer these 500GB Greens being made. WD changed their Greens (they were originally touted & sold as NAS-ready) when they decided to trot out the Reds at a premium price.

Now, all I see is 1TB Reds— no more 500's & no more 5400rpm.

Unless— does anyone here know of a source?

Cheers!

  • Hi, Do you have a WD Model Number for you current drive, e.g WD5000AZRX ?

    • What difference does it make?

    • It's the WD5000AVVS/5400- & yes, the Intellipower circa 2008…I've only ever used it for non-essentials (personal) like the kids school work, music, shows, etc…& as a backup for other bits & bobs. I'm now setting up a proper server (mirrored also) for my work & this mediahub will hold all personal stuff- so now I need to set it up RAID mirrored. My end result is to eliminate about 8 - 10 externals that are floating around with duplicate files.

What I found in my reading is that the original WD Greens were actually promoted as "for NAS"—> until they decided to market the new Red line. Once they did that, they suddenly stated that the Green drives were not good for NAS. I believe they altered something which now causes the Greens to park heads after a few seconds of non-use- thus rendering it not healthy for a 24/7 system.

It's possible a 1TB might work- just seems a waste of drive & $$$. I was hoping to happen upon an old store of original drives.

      Anyway- thanks for the tip.

      Cheers!

  • Check the manual for your NAS. It may be able to mirror a 500 on to a 1TB. And if you can another 1TB later you can expand.

Also don't worry about buying a red over a green, it's all fine.

  • I'm now recalling buying a WD Blue & not using it on a job…have to hunt through my totes. I just cannot believe I have no leftover 500's! I'm tempted to break open a couple of 1TB externals just to get the drives out now- lol.

Thanks all- I do appreciate the ideas & feedback.

    Cheers! :)
