  • Why I can't use $5 off after you got my email address. It's my first order and it says coupons expired.

    • I just about to ask this…

  • This is very similar to a netcomm one I bought. Here's the amusing part:
    * the ethernet connection is 100Mbit
    * the wired connections through the powerline is up to 200mbit
    * the WiFi is 300mbit

What is the point of a 300mbit wifi access point if it cannot communicate faster than 200mbit across the powerline, and if the connection to the router or pc is only 100mbit?

    • why did you buy one?
these gives a more stable connection and not all walls are paper thin.
theres no point in having fast wifi if it keeps dropping or are unreachable

      • I got it because it was the only powerline adapter with two ethernet ports on the other end. Meant I didn't have to put another router on the receiving end. But it is a bit deceiving to advertise 200mbps and 300mbps speeds if there is a 100mbps bottleneck.

    • All speeds are theoretical only, but Wifi is particularly susceptible to interference. Very unlikely you'll get 100Mb on a 300Mb wifi connection. Same goes for the powerline adapters too, only to a lesser extent.

    • +1

WiFi to WiFi is 300Mbit. Is it that difficult to understand?

      • But who would buy it for that purpose?
Still does not explain the use of a 200mbit connection to a device which itself has a 100mbit ethernet port.

        • +1

          File transfer between wireless devices.

  • So do you guys think this is worth it or go for a NetComm one?
I'm building a new house and in need of one of these! Seems like a good deal for bundle deal.

    • +3

If you're building a new house wouldn't you want to go for gigabit ethernet in the walls?

      • Because it is cheaper than what the builder is going to charge for gigabit ethernet in the walls.

        • +1

But wired cables are always going to be much more reliable and will give you guaranteed speeds. Wireless and EoP adapters will generally always have speed issues. Might cost you more now but you will thank yourself for it in the long run.

        • Agree it might be more reliable but yes the main reason was cost. I'll give this a try but if all else fails I'm planning to pull my own cat-6 cables to the other rooms. Can't be that difficult right?

    • The speed of network-over-powerline is going up all the time. Unless you need lightning speeds (dedicated ethernet cables, which as you realised are not cheap at all), I would probably just use network-over-powerline. For a new house with good cabling it should be very reliable. Mine is rocksolid.

  • I've found that any of these EoP units are pretty dodgy, unless your house is brand new with short, low-resistance wiring installed.

    • +1

I use them in my house.

I run one from the back room of the house, and then out into the garage.

      They work ok.

Cleaner than running networking cable over the grass, haha.

And much easier than trying to get a wireless signal inside a steel shed.

  • Yeah its gonna be brand new. I'm hoping that means I'll get short lowe resistance wiring?

  • OP - can you please confirm if we can use the $5 coupon? It's not accepting it at checkout.

    • Ok thanks just saw the disclaimer in the description now.
No further discounts apply - ie $5 free

Ordered one thanks. Hope it works well.

  • I use a different brand, worked great in my townhouse to connect to a neighbours place that was 5 townhouses down :)

Currently using as I'm now in a really old building that kills wireless

  • I use a different brand, worked great in my townhouse to connect to a neighbours place that was 5 townhouses down :)

The whole block of townhouses are connected to one phase?!

    • How did you come to that conclusion?

      • Each house/property has their own phases (ie. electrical network) so technically should not be able to connect to other houses. I'm unsure of how townhouses, apartments or flats are hooked up to the powergrid though…

        • Bit of digging, apparently this is a pretty well known issue
          http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2041798
Smart meters allow the signal to pass to neighbouring properties, if they are on the same phase. If you correctly set your encryption then this shouldn't be an issue of course.

        • Each house/property has their own phases

          No they don't

so technically should not be able to connect to other houses

Huh?.Do you think each property has a dedicated electrical line back to the power generators?

  • You can get a 2 pack of Tplinks from MSY for $59. Have installed these units in 2 customer shouses recently. Have worked quite well where wireless reception was quite poor to certain lcoation in the house. Placed an extra AP at the blackspot area and all issues solved. ive genreally found you have to use them directly in a wall(so no power boards) and they work quite reliably. But old houses forget it. Whilst they might sync ok the speeds generally suck due to age of wiring, etc.

  • Hey guys, will this works if my intention is for streaming movies, ie from tvpad2. Thanks

    • Is will work, but suggest you buy, try & return if not suitable. Again it comes down to age & condition of the wiring. Older wires aren't very well shielded & EMI will greatly affect whether it works or not.

      • Electrical wiring is not shielded.

    • Your streaming abiliies will be highly reliant on the speeds you attain. Which you wont know until you set them up. If its a newish place and you plug directly into power points then you will have more success than you otherwise would. Just avoid power boards. ie plug directly into a power point for best results.

  • How are these on powerboards?
I have no free wall outlets.

    • +1

      Not recommended. nuf said

    • +1

Id suggest making a free wall plug by using a power board elsewhere to make up the difference. They dont work well at all on power boards. You will lose sync speed and they are more likely to lose sync or not sync at all.

  • Ordered one set.. Hope they work!

    • Wonderful! The website says "In stock", and "Ships Today!", but calling 1300 927 266 actually tells the true story - the shipment apparently arrives today, and "you should have it by Friday".

      • Website still says "Awaiting Packing" for my order.. anyone else got theirs yet?

  • Shipping was $8.95, but still a good price for a wirless powerline kit.
