Costumes? Rent or Buy?

Hi all,

I got an upcoming Superhero-themed party and was just wondering whether it's worth it to buy instead of rent.

I can see here that a lot costume rental places charge per night around $50-$90 and the benefits are that you can try them in store, possibly getting better quality than buying of the same price, and some will even provide alteration if required.

However, if I search online, I can find costumes which can cost as cheap as $30-$90 especially when purchasing from overseas.

What are your thoughts?

  • If it's a themed party chances are another party will have another theme (which means if you buy, then you will always be buying). I would other try to borrow a costume of someone or spend the least amount of money on one. Just rent it, it's a one off thing and usually these things just take up room in the closet for years after use when bought.

  • do you have any good recommendation for renting these costumes? from what I've seen renting costs pretty much the same as buying…

    • +1

Then just buy it… I assumed renting it was cheaper (naturally). Don't have any recommendations unfortunately, maybe use recyclable stuff that can be found at home and be toiletrollpapertissuebox man.

    • buy them, after you finish with them sell them. may get some profit or you will not loss that much

      • have you ever bought in the past? how much did you spend?

        • Yes I bought two costumes last year for a party from eBay. After I noticed I am not going to use them again sold them in eBay(bidding). Got good price for one of them (more than the original price) and the second wasn't that bad. But due to eBay and PayPal fees got around 80% of the original price which was better than renting them.
I notice its independ on the size and the kind of costume

        • this makes me think twice now… thanks!

Ozbargainer going to a superhero party, would go as the invisible man. (Save $90 and stay at home)

    • i believe its too much hassle… but I sort of… have to go… (work) B-)
