4 stroke mower

Hey, just bought a house and have a bit of a backyard I now need to mow.

Looking for a mower and want something with a Honda, Briggs and stratton or victa kind of performance. Anyone know of any decent specials going around? Wanted to spend $300-$400ish, or less.

Sidebar, the house had complications for settlement and the yard hasn't been mowed for 3 months… Needless to say, some weeds have taken over. Should we be removing all these weeds by hand first? They are quite substantial… Or mow over and get them when they are small?

  • I recently purchased a new Victa which has a Briggs and Stratton 4 stroke in it. I have found it quiet and great on fuel. Mine was just above your budget, but there were many around the price you are looking at.
I might add that my previous victa commando lasted 21 years and I have a large 1200sqm block that was generally mowed once every three weeks.

  • B&S have been making the same engine for years. Even when they look different, just unbolt the plastic surrounds and you'll see the same engine beneath.

I don't know of any bargains, but wanted to make a suggestion… I used to hate mowing until I bought a mulching mower. No more bending or disposing of grass clippings. Well worth paying a couple of hundred more IMHO.

Oh - and ours uses normal mower blades, rather than a thick cutting bar. I don't know if that type is available any more. But if it is, I prefer it over sharpening (or paying to sharpen) a bar type.

As for weeds… Up to you really. I've found it easier to remove when they've got plenty of leaves to hold onto, and the ground may be softer to do it, due to not being mowed for a while. Mowing can spread the seeds throughout the lawn = more weeds. But you might think it's easier to mow and poison them with one of those chemical wands.

  • Thanks for the advice. I am now thinking I will weed all of the big weeds, then get an electric whipper snipper to knock down the length of teh grass and then mow.

So now just popping down to Bunnings to get electric trimmer and mower. Unless someone has found a good special.
