What a coincidence, I just got my official "AMD Never-Settle-Reloaded" Bioshock Infinite game code email today! I redeemed it on the AMD site 15th August, hounded AMD on their forums until they finally gave me the code over a month later, and played the game. Only now, over 2 months later, did they finally send it to me officially. So don't hold your breath when it comes to the free game codes. It might come instantly, it might take months.

Great GPU, but I'd expect to see much better clearance prices than this on the 7970 in the coming weeks due to all the new GPU models and official price drops.

As OP says, another place has it for the same price. Several more have it for $349. Not a very rare price, though it's a decent one.

  • I received a physical coupon when I bought my Gigabyte HD7950 from PCCG a few months back, they never disappoint on customer service :)

Oh I got the code from the coupon, but it's just a code you redeem on the AMD website, and they then send you out steam/uplay/etc codes for each of the games.

The Blood Dragon code came in that email, but the Bioshock Infinite code was missing ("Sorry, we ran out of these temporarily, we'll send it to you ASAP"). I expected "ASAP" to be about a day, not 2 months.

So best to treat the games as a bonus, not something that significantly sweetens the deal, because the games might be $10 in the Steam Holiday sale before you actually get them :( .

it's always had the free games

That one's a link to the PCCG store and this one is Mwave, but they offer the same price.

Yeah I picked up the 7950 Gigabyte from Mwave for about $50 less a while back. I had somehow managed to muck up the online order and forgotten to put in the code to redeem the bonus games, something I found out at the register, but the attending staff member fixed me up and handed me a physical coupon after a 3 minute wait.

Great service and a decent deal.

  • What's the best bang for buck high-end graphics card at the moment?
    Building a $1k gaming comp for BF4
So far I see GTX670 and HD7970 popping up on ozbargain.

r9 270x is cheaper than this, and will run bf4 just fine on ultra at 1080p. But I will probably get this if I want to play on higher resolutions

HD 7970 is a step up from the GTX 670:

      http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-rev…

But yeah, those are already a bit above the price-performance sweet spot, and it gets worse as you go up.

I'd wait for a clearance deal on either of those. We've seen a few really good deals (e.g. 670 for $229, though most people missed out on that one). I'm hoping to see 7970s well under 300 and 7950s close to 225 in the next month or so. Recent price drops, new GPUs announced, etc.

    • +1

I would say it's still the 7950 if you can get one for <$280 and the never settle bundle.

Otherwise wait for the 280x price to come down in a couple of months.

      • +1

Agreed. I'm waiting on the 280x too. Performs on par with the 770 at 1080 at $100 cheaper.

  • So I'm confused, are these 3 games the Never Settle Forever promo, or are they a bonus on top of it? Because my understanding was that the never settle promo you could pick 3 games of your choice from their range, not have 3 games picked for you? And I don't recall Bioshock being in that one either…

If it means 6 games all up I'd probably jump on it as a fairly unnecessary update to my 7870…

    • Never Settle Forever promo is for newer cards. These are older ones on clearance (Never Settle Reloaded).

      • The Never Settle promo isn't even available on the new cards though right? But is still active on the old 7xxx series until stocks run out. Word around the traps is once the stock is depleted AMD will announce the Never Settle promo for the new ones, but I'd happily grab an older one given they're virtually the same thing anyway!

    • You can't be serious…

Dota 2 > LOL, but thats besides the point, such a useless comment…

  • I'm kinda hesitating with this card. The weakest factory overclock I'm have seen from a OC non-reference card. Should I bite?

    • +2

For $50-70 more you could have a R9 280x, which is the 7970 ghz edition. Nice card, would last you ages.

      • +1

I'm in the process of buying pieces for my first gaming pc, I've done a fair bit of research and I've started to see that the r9 280x is the best card in the 350ish price range? Would that be correct?

        • In my research, I've come to that conclusion too. Especially if you like to mod your games or want to go higher resolutions than 1080.

    • +1

mines running 1100mhz fine, it just gets hot and crashes if I go any higher. This card isn't compatible with most waterblocks aswell since the vrams are lower in height.

Like always with OC, it's a lottery. But between other 7970's $50 extra imo isn't wort an extra 50mhz, let alone 100mhz.

    • +1

Mines at 1125/1575, so I'm happy. Temps get into the mid 70s using the auto fan profile but I can keep it under 65 using my custom one.

  • I'm thinking they won't come down too far in price, maybe i am wrong, but the r9 290x is gunna be like 600-650 bucks (when you can find one), and anyone looking to drop that on a gfx card was not looking at the 7970's anyway really…

  • I bought a powercolor 6950 2 years ago and it's been constantly overheating on me, with strange artifacts and blue screens. I'd pay more for a brand with better coolers.

Horrific quality. Buy a proper brand - Sapphire or Gigabyte.
