As per title.
i5/i7 3rd or preferably 4th gen
8GB RAM

Touchscreen
Full HD would be nice but not a must.
Backlit keyboard if possible.
And yeah a decent graphics card

  • Something like the (EOL?) Toshiba P50t-A01C that came up for under a grand a couple of times would be perfect… Do you think these will make another appearance? Stock seems to be limited. Or even the toshiba L50A might be suitable though it hasn't got touchscreen. Really need Dick Smith to do another 20% off toshiba deal.

There's also the ASUS Vivobook, they have a couple of models with the touch screen but only a GT635M instead of the 740 in the toshiba so not quite as good for gaming.

    Any other options?

  • I think the Toshiba P50t-A01C or P50t-A016 are your best bet. Only problem is the price - bricks an mortar stores have them between $1250-$1500. Negotiate 10% off?

Also, ebay has them for about $1K at the moment. Depends on your appetite for risk :-)

As Riczter said, another option is the Vivobook -$899. Unfortunately, that seems to be on sale and today is the last day? :-( Also, no Full HD screen and not latest gen. of CPU on the Vivobook. Personally, I don't think the Vivobook is worth it even at that price.

  • How about the HP ENVY 15-J021TX for $1052
Haswell i7,8GB,1TB,GT740M and touch screen.. fits the same bill as the toshiba just without the FHD screen and this has no optical drive. Can anyone comment on how good it is? I found a single report that it overheats on ozbargain, but nothing to back that up on any google search so I'm thinking it might be a good possibility for my needs.

  • Strange that some sites say "Full HD": 1 and 2 but other sites 3 say it's not?

    • I'd say some places like centrecom and MLN have just copied and pasted a generic HP Envy 15 product info, but I'd say this actual model, the J021TX, is one that doesn't have the FHD, as shown in the actual specs. Still pretty slack though.

  • For all the specifications you're asking for, you won't find any laptops in that price bracket. The closest one I can find is ~$1150 and it's a HP. HP's have shitty quality build for the long term (8 years, 3 different HP laptops) and do you really need a touch screen? I find it very pointless as it just seems like a gimmick and with the specs you're looking for, looks like you want to game with it, most games don't even try to implement touch controls. But hey if you're looking for a FHD touch then TouchSmart Envy15-J017TX is the way to go. MSY $1199
