Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Ultrabook

What do people think of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Ultrabook with multi-touch screen?

They come with a huge price tag ($1850) but they are light (around 1.4kg), battery life claimed of 8hrs and with a Intel Core i5-3427U I assume it should be pretty damn quick for most ultrabook tasks (web browsing, word processing, email etc).

Are they good bang-for-buck?

It's for a long overdue upgrade to a Dell Studio 15 Intel Core i7-720QM (1.6GHz, 6MB Cache) with 6Gb RAM.

I've been sitting on the fence for buying a laptop for over 12months now and don't feel I'm any closer to making a decision.

How would this go for photo-processing?

Won't be used for games so that should not be an issue.

Was aiming for something closer to $1200-$1500, any recommendations?

Also would be great to have a good international warranty as will get used more in Mexico / US / NZ than Australia…..

Simple really, skip it, since it hasn't updated to the latest Haswell CPU.

  • Used to be cheaper. I wouldn't buy it for photo processing. It's a business grade carbon-framed laptop for jet-setting executives :) If it stays on the desk most of the time, I'll buy something with the mobile CPU rather than ULV. Dell at the moment also have better support/warranty service than Lenovo.

    • scotty, could please explain what you mean by "mobile CPU".

I am also in the market for ultrabook, similar to the OP, for photography (photoshop, to control DSLR camera, post-procesing)
      price range to ~ $1500.
      Thanks
      :)

      • The CPU model that ends with "M", rather than "U". For example X230 has i5-3320M, whereas X1 Carbon has CPUs like i5-3337U. However if you are looking for an Ultrabook, then those ULV processors are the only ones out there.

      • They are not as powerful, however use much less energy, therefore lasting longer (or lasting the same time, using a smaller battery. Therefore less weight).
