Dog trimmers, what's the best value

Hi everyone, we have a couple shaggy dogs and they need regular clippers.

We have gone through a few different ones, from cheapo to decent, they all seem to die..

I'm prepared to spend $200, but don't want to just buy the most expensive, I just want the best value.

Give me your thoughts!

Thanks :)

  • I bought a WAHL KM-SS off eBay around 2 years ago and havnt looked back. We've got a Maltese poodle, curly hair and a King Charles Cav, absolutely no problem giving them a haircut, This clipper is very powerful and won't bog down like a cheapy.

  • If gou speak go any reputable groomer they will fecommend the gold series OSTER.Dont skimp on blades you will basically need a 15 and a 10
There are different quality of these, go for the longest lasting. You do realize
that they need sharpening on a regular basis or you have waisted your money, same goes for the Clippers.Clean them after every use as all Osters come with a small tube of oil.
There are multiple places which deal with Oster-service etc.
If in doubt as to where to buy etc you can contacf Oster direct-they wont sell to the public but will give advice. If gou decide on Oster there is a rep in NSW
who will give you a good deal plus advice as these are expensive.l wont give you his ph no but OSTER in Botany Bay will. His name is Bob.
The other thing if you have a badly tangled coat few clippers can deal with that. You need to scissor the knots and clumps.
If gou bother to comb gour pet 3 times a week you wont have knots. You won t have so much work.Dont buy, Wahl, noisy, ,constant overheating.
    Good luck

berger wants something at a decent price, not just the most expensive. Sounds like oster are pretty unobtainable through a normal outlet only through Bob in Botany bay. WAHL on the other hand are used by vets, pro dog groomers and the average person. like I said, nearly two years of use without fault, no overheating and not noisy, I wouldn't use the clippers on my small dogs if it were otherwise.
Blades are cheap on eBay too, I buy original WAHL brand, stay sharper longer. Although I have most size blades Size 10 seems to work the best for my dogs. If you aren't on eBay most good pet shops stock WAHL clippers and spares does oster?

      • There seems to be a few outlets with Oster, but it's getting a little expensive, a few people seem happy with the Wahl clippers..

  • To keep your blades sharp longer, my tip is to wash your dogs beforehand and cut when they are fully dry.

I've read that the dirt and particles in the coat cause the blades to dull faster.

These blades do not come cheap.

We have something like the first poster (WAHL KM-SS) and are more happy. We got ours from Clipperworld http://clipperworld.com.au/ They are in Cranbourne so reasonably local to you. They do ship but we picked ours up to save on potage and ask for advice. Can't comment on their prices now but at the time they were very competitive. They also sharpen blades as well for about $15 or so, saving you buying new blades.

    • I'm in Cranbourne every few days so I might go down and have. Look either tomorrow, or the weekend. The wall km-Ss seems to be a popular one, and $165 is on par with eBay procing(plus I get to support locals, and warranty etc is easy) and the blade sharpening would be handy too.

  • From clipper world.
Wahl KM-SS Clipper With Tool Bag
Professional Rotary Motor Animal Clipper Features: Single speed Cool running Fast cutting Light weight Quiet …

    Wahl KM-SS Single Speed Kit
SALE PRICE $165 Professional Rotary Motor Animal Clipper Features: Single speed Cool running Fast cutting Light weight …

Did you read that schnauzer, Professional, cool running and quiet. Good price too!

  • If they're woolly dogs I'd tend to look for the Wahl professional KM2. They're going to be less likely to get bogged in their hair.

As already mentioned, trim only when they're clean and dry. I lent mine to a friend who clearly ignored this request, so off the blade went to get sharpened again ….. $16 later. Get yourself a can of oster blade wash while you're at it, to keep the blades from overheating, and stop them getting too gunked up while in use.

Whatever you buy make sure it takes the fur off but the skin on.

You'll want to make sure the box says "Clippers" and not "7-piece knife block". Confusing at times, but I get by.

  • I bought Wahl KM2 early this year from ry.com.au.

I asked ry.com.au to pricematch with Mammoth pet supplies who is selling it for $175.50. And because Ry.com.au does free standard delivery for anything over $99 so I'm saving a further $7 on delivery fee (win!)

Btw, I really like the clipper, it works really well.

I suppose you could do the same with the KM-SS if you are interested in getting that model instead.

  • KM-SS are great clippers. We use it to trim our poodle and it does a fantastic job.
Sometimes I do feel that having a cordless clipper is better where you are more flexible to move around and you dont get obstructed by the cord.

  • I finally got the KM2-SS today, $165, with bonus cordless trimmer! The fiancé is happy as can be!
