GPU Questions regarding 3D

I am currently looking to upgrade my pc, currently running an i7 2600 and a gtx460 1gb OC

I am upgrading my pc case and motherboard while I was at it, looking at the ASRock Z77 Extreme3 Motherboard, which has 2 gpu slots so I could sli if that would give me better performance for value

I watch 3D blurays on my pc and do a fair bit of 3D gaming

I play some games in 1080p, and I like to have the settings on at least high, for 3d gaming I can only use 720p to get 60fps with the projector. Hoping the gpu will last me a couple of years.

My questions are

  1. I use a BENQ W1070 projector for my 3D gaming, it has the nvidia 3dtv play label on it, does this mean it ONLY works with nvidia graphics cards for 3d, or could I use an amd and still watch 3d movies and 3d gaming with it.

  2. What would be the best card at the moment to buy, or should I wait a little bit for better sales/price drops? I was thinking maybe a 670/760 or I don't mind amd if it will work with 3d

  3. Would I be better off just running 2 gtx 460's in sli, the one runs games decently for me at the moment

Thanks guys

It's just branding. However note that 3D in games is still hit and miss on support from either Nvidia or AMD. Basically it never took off and most people don't like it, so don't expect great support.

Now is a good time to buy due to recent drops. 760 is good, 670 will be hard to find. AMD has some very good options too, not sure who is good (or less bad?) with 3D right now.

Maybe, but mostly likely better off just selling yours and get a new single GPU. This is very true if you have to replace your motherboard and/or PSU.

    • Hey thanks for your help Bruce. I play maybe 1/4 games in 3D using 3dtv play and enjoy the immersion for certain games

Now that I know both will work that gives me a little more option

I'll stick with the single GPU then thanks

Might ask in the gaming section about nvidia vs amd for 3d
