PlayStation Plus worth it?

Hey fellow OzBargainers,

I'm getting a PS4 at launch and was thinking about buying a PS+ subscription as well. At the moment they are $19.95 for 3 months or $69.95 for a year.

I was just wondering if anyone in the community has any views, experience or opinions on PS+ and whether they think it is worth it. I am not a huge gamer, but between the whole family I am sure we could make use of it.

Does it ever come on sale? Has anyone purchased it and thought it was a waste of time/money?

Would be very interested to hear any/all opinions on the topic.

  • Yes it's worth it. Nobody in the history of gamers has not thought it to be not worth every cent!

    • Depends on your usage. For me it is not worth it as I rarely use my PS3 and mostly game on the PC. Even the free games I can usually buy on PC for less than the subscription costs.

Also given that it is now required for online play with the PS4, they don't have as much of a reason to provide good free stuff.

      • Sorry but that's just wrong, yeah I know Arkham City was on Humble Bundle but Metal Gear Rising, Mass Effect 3, Far Cry 3, NFS Most Wanted, Infamous 2, Uncharted 3. Find me those for extremely cheap prices on PC.
As for your last statement that is just totally subjective.

        • that is slightly unfair, most of these are exclusives/not on PC, and you can get most of the others for fairly cheap (console running ~$50-60+, pc running ~$20-30 or less depending on sales). these prices are not as good as ps+ ($69.95 for a one-year subscription and $19.95 for a 90-day subscription)
It really depends on how often you play and what you play
personally for me, console gaming has decreased (haven't played in a couple of months) and pc gaming has increased(5-6 times a week)

PS+ has a couple of good sales every so often, and if you are a big multiplayer then it is essential. the free games are a nice bonus and there are usually some pretty good games and compared to microsoft does seem to be more value for money

Its totally fair, he said he can usually buy the free games cheaply. Its a PS and many of the free games are top quality first party titles.

My original comment was tongue in cheek, fact is though this guy is buying a PS4 on/near launch so chances are this is his main gaming machine, Plus is a must for anyone in his situation and not in the sense that XBL is a must for Xbox users. The top quality freebies, the the sales (for instance Blood Dragon is $6.90 this week) and finally online play for non F2P games.

It is required if you wish to go online and kill some noobs. Compared to the XBOX online subscription, 69.95 per year is a bargain. When I do get my PS4, which will be right after I change my username to something else, I will be buying it.

usually there will be one or two sale on PS+ sub. 25% off or extra 3 months if you buy one year, you can stack your subscription too. it's worth every cent with the auto update and free games every month.

Awesome. Thanks for the replies folks.

Re: killing noobs… that doesn't really apply to me… I'm more likely to be one of the noobs being killed. Haha.

I think it depends on what you've got, if you just have a ps3 then with the ps4 coming on in a couple of weeks I'd say ps3 games are going to be really cheap with clearances and ebay. If you've got a ps3/vita then it's totally worth it, and if you're getting a ps4 then it's pretty much a requirement

Also, you don't need a particular console to 'buy' the free games. Just log into the Sony Entertainment Online Store on your browser, and claim every single free game. Even if your membership lapses, you'll get the games back when you renew.

  • I was reading somewhere that the launch day console comes with a one month subscription to Playstation Plus, so I might get to try before I buy.

    • This is true.

      • Looking forward to it. PlayAsia have already shipped some of the PS4 games I preordered (as of today). Can't wait until the 30th!

        • Oohh I wonder if my BF4 was shipped?

          /runs

  • You will only fully utilize the PS+ if you got both Vita and PS4 also apparently the US got really good benefits for their PS+ membership.

    • EU/AU get the better benefits. Also the other comment is common sense apart from to truly benefit you'd need the PS3 as well.

PS Plus is definitely worth it if you have a Vita or a PS3 currently. It's an incredible deal, with a great range of well reviewed free games each month, both big and small titles.

The pessimist in me however thinks that once the PS4 is released, it is no longer going to be as good a deal.

    Considering:
The PS4 is going to have a limited launch lineup, and they won't be giving any of the 'big' games out for free for a year (at the very least).
There's no backward compatibility, so they can't provide PS3 games for the PS4. (or they could keep releasing games for the PS3 as the plus bonus instead.)
The PS4 requires PS Plus to play games online (Like Xbox Live). It's easy for them to make the argument that the online play is where you get the future 'value'.

PS Plus was a great way of getting people back into the Playstation eco-system (myself included) and earn some goodwill, but I'll be curious to see how long they can continue the same level of value with new consoles.

    • I share your concerns Iso. I didn't want to sign up for a year long subscription of something that used to be good. But having done some research (and read the above comments) I am quietly confident. My understanding is that PSPlus includes Resogun and Contrast (both PS4 games) at launch (Resogun in particular is getting some rave reviews). Fingers crossed I guess.

  • YES. Best thing to hit PS

FYI, Grid 2 + Resogun + others for Decembers PS+ lineup

Take the fact that Grid 2 costs about 30$,so simply buying 2-3 games per year costs more than PS+ which includes many more games.

    • I was meaning to say that I really appreciate your incoming/outgoing posts CyberGenesys. I was finding it difficult to tell what (and more importantly WHEN) games were coming and going. Your posts made it easy. It appears I've missed out on a few good ones that I would have liked to have played from October (Farcry 3, etc), but oh well. Do they ever come back (get recycled back through), or are they a one time deal?

      • +1

They are one time as far as I know. Maybe once they run out of games they'll start recycling?

FarCry 3 was a terrible game, and made worse on the PS3. I nearly just deleted it before the first mission ended because it seemed to have a crappy framerate and was making my eyes hurt. In retrospect it would have been better if I had, it was boring, repetitive and the boss fights were just drug induced trippy fests. There have been much better games in IGC than FarCry 3.

The reviews that give it 6/10 I would say are the most accurate.

Usually a one off, if not a looooong time in between.
