What is the best phone plan under $50?

Hi all,

I was hoping to get your thoughts about the best phone plan. I am a student and use my phone quite regularly, especially with the use of the internet. I've purchased my phone outright, and was with TPG for the past few months on a $45 per month contract which gave me (if I recall correctly) $1000 worth of calls and text as well as 2GB worth of data. Had a few problems with them recently with the internet being pretty much useless and my sim card deactivating randomly.

Just wondering if there's a plan out there which you know of that offers something similar with more network stability. Appreciate the help!

You could try one of the unlimited plans going around if you really need that much calls and data…

    Amaysim (Optus 3g): $40/m unlimited calls/sms + 4gb data
    Aldi (Telstra 3g): $35/m unlimited calls/sms + 2.5gb data
    Boost (Telstra 3g): $40/m unlimited calls/sms + 3gb data

Others to consider: Vaya, Yatango, Buying $10 telstra pre-paid, etc. etc.

Personally as a student myself…I can't afford $50/m so I'm using Vaya $18 plan. You should check how much usage you actually use of that $1000 and 2gb per month and find a suitable plan.

  • Check out:

Live Connected ($55 for the unlimited plan, 3GB of Data). This is a 4G SIM.

Amaysim ($39.90 for the unlimited plan, 4GB of Data) and the first month is currently 50% off.

Yatango (you make your own plans)

    Vodafone is offering a $50 BYO sim with;

    Unlimited Calls within Australia
    Unlimited Text worldwide
3GB 4G Data (Special offer till Christmas, normally 1.5GB)
$65 of credit per month to use on 1300/1800 or international calls.

I've found the new Vodafone network to be much better than Optus as long as your handset is 850MHz 3G compatible.

    • Plus,
      Data is counted per kB
As this is a RED plan you get access to the Australian call centre
and Roam in US, NZ and Europe for $5 a day (allows you to use unlimited calls and txt within the country and back to Australia and use your data allowance)

Telstra prepaid encore cap - recharge $50, get $950 worth of calls and texts and 800mb, then with the $50 'real' credit, buy a $49 (3GB) data plus pack.
Ends up being 3.8GB on the Telstra 4g network.

I have had no problems with TPG, have been with them for many eyars and they save me a bundle, how is the SIM card failing their fault? (just a question)

There are a a few cheaper providers at the moment, just be aware that they all have very very poor customer service and will likely from what I've read have problems, one I was looking at for a friend charged the data in small blocks rather than 1 meg blocks, which made them look very sweet, sad support comes with the attractive price.
All you need to know can be found here, spend some time reading and you should be able to make an objective decision.
