Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 or Canon EOS 700D? Dilemma

I had a Canon 550D. Now wanna buy another camera but a great dilemma. GX7 is extremely portable and frankly 550D was a pain in the a#se to carry two lens. And i am thinking to get the 20mm f1.7 lens for GX7. Also GX7 has features like wifi, Timelapse , HDR etc but its expensive and i doubt it will produce equally great pictures like a proper DSLR. I am not a PRO..just a enthusiast . I loved all my pics from 500D . What do you guys think.

I own the panasonic gx7 (and several mft lenses including the 20mm f1.7) and I am extremely happy with it (also own the GH3). I have no hesitation in recommending the panasonic gx7. It's a great camera packed with features and small enough to take anywhere. Go for it.

ps. if it's your first MFT and you don't have any other lenses you might want to go for the 14-42 lens kit instead of the 20mm)

    • Thanks for the reply drbuckyballs. 20mm kit is 1100 and 14-42 was 948 so i was about to buy the 20mm just because its f1.7. What would be an great second lens additional to 20mm.

Get the Panasonic G6. It is brilliant and best value for money - period.
NO TIME LIMIT ON VIDEO RECORDING. THE AUSSIE VERSION SEEMLESSLY AUTO RE-STARTS AT 4GB FILE SIZE.

It has a fully articulted screen that puts it way ahead of the GX7. I also have a Sony NEX 3N with tilt screen and it just not in the same street as the G6 when you want to take a photo in a awkward space - I was doing macro shots yesterday and the G6 got the job.
Regarding the extra lens, get a 14-42mm. PZ version is compact, but more expensive. Regular model is great and at least $100 cheaper.
(Note the cameras mentioned next have video recording limits.)
You mention the 700D in your OP - that would be a very good option if you have other compatible accessories from your 550D. If you are looking to save a bit of money for accessories like a good bounce flash, I would be grabbing a Nikon D5200 as they are now entering the run-out phase.

  • You wont be dissapointed with the 20mm,

I'm about to ge the gx7, but im taking a different route, im going for 14-42mm first, as drbuckyballs said, and then maybe getting a prime lens later. 14-42 for me gives me a bit more flexibility to play around with zoom.

But i was seriously considering the 20mm.

If i were to get two lens, id get the 14-42mm (wide + zoom) and the 20mm(prime lens/sharp low f stop etc).

    thats my 2c

  • If weather sealed is a concern for you then you may also want to consider OMD E-M5. Very similar feature with excellent In body image stabilisation (IBIS) and classic look

  • Definitely the gx7. Price- value - features - size - handling - even looks, it is all in the gx7.
My first lens was 12-35mm very good lens but really expensive so I suggest 14-42 for entry level and budget but performance is good. Then I bought the 25mm Panasonic leica summilux and a whole bunch of fantastic old Nikon and super takumar lenses from ebay. Also you can mount canon FD lenses with adapter for less than $100 so great to try a whole bunch of prime focal sizes on a budget. Note that the non mft lenses will be all manual focus but that's where the great gx7 focus peaking feature comes in.
Gx7 is all enthusiast needs…I've been down the DSLR track with canon and Nikon, too expensive and too heavy and I'm not a pro photographer so ended up selling everything and went mirrorless and never looked back… I spend more time with the gx7 than i used to use my dslrs. I take the gx7 anywhere I go because of its size and it is simply a great allrounder and performer. Even the gh3 only comes out for video now. Your dilemma is solved…

  • Thank you. GX7 it is despite JB sales.
