  • I'm guessing they'd make their money back by expired gift cards.

Nope, they make the money selling the fuel in the first place.
Even at 20c off they make a NICE margin

Not really, I use to work at a petrol station, 90% of profits come from the groceries/cigarettes in store, profit generated from petrol varied from 1 to 5c/L.

        • And yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus!

        • +3

The petrol station may get a tiny cut on the profit. They are just franchisees. Parent company still make good money on petrol.
That's why they can change the price up and down between 10c-30c every week.

Have you ever seen the price of petrol in other countries? We charge allot here in OZ and we dont pay much globally for the petrol.
Woolies know that 20c off a litre + 4c off in store for 5 litres of $1/L milk means 24c off , plus station wages, maintenance, and petrol freight costs..

When its cheap they buy it up and store it, when its not they raise the price.
Don't be stupid, It's a business like any other selling at/near "cost price" (telling staff the poor me story to pass on)..

Not making a big profit, is not why you go into a multi billion dollar business selling resources

        • Some "Woolworths Petrol" are franchised, some are company owned.

I believe the ones that accept the vouchers for LPG are the company owned stores.

        • Both of which have price protection on the discount fuel offers so they are never at a loss.

  • I don't get it. Purchase $100 worth of gift cards, and they give you 20c/L discount on your next fuel purchase?

    • Yes, on those selected gift cards.

If you are going to buy the nespresso coffee machine from DJ anyway and don't have the Amex promo then why not. 20c per litre x 50 litre of fuel = $10 of saving.

  • No woolworths group gift cards??

    • If that ever happen, anyone that comes up with this brilliant idea is going to lose his job.

  • +2

Depending on what credit card you use to fund the purchase and what you intended to buy, this may work out pretty well. i.e. buy something $250 worth from DJ, purchase a $100 card from Woolies with your Amex Plat Edge (3x points at supermarkets) then put the rest on the same card combined it with the $30 off for purchase over $150. Bonus points and cashback. Can't get any better than that?

  • can you use the same receipt to get $30 slab of vb?
