Portable Air Conditioner

Currently am renting a place and really am in need of some cooling for the coming summer.

Sadly the windows are high vertical ones that open out so no way of installing an in wall Aircon (without just smashing out a window(

Any suggestions on what to get? Not sure how to use an air conditioner since there will be no easy way to get the hot air out of the room.

And pretty sure Evaporative coolers suck (pun intended).

Anyone had any success with Air Con in rentals?

after suffering through last summer in a rental on the top floor of a unit block with a flat slab roof, where the internal roof was always 50C+ when the sun was out, sometimes the easiest thing to do is never rent a place without air/con or where its not easy to put one in, and/or move if you are. but thats likely not an easy option (we had to tough it out as we were moving in march anyway).

if you're going to be there long term, best option is to ask landlord first about going 50/50 with them on aircon, or paying more rent, etc. since you're going to end up paying probably $500 or so for a decent portable, and then double or triple energy costs given theyre so ridiculously inefficient.

if thats not an option, then you can go typical portable, and extend the vent using some kind of ducting (http://stores.ebay.com.au/NorthAmericaHVAC/Duct-Accessories-…) to the window above. longer ducting = more heat from the outlet pipe into the room… but if you were to get decent (higher R rating?) duct you and replace the existing duct itself that comes with the AC, you might make it more efficient then it was to start with, as those plastic ones they come with arent that good.

best portable, if you can get one, is a split system (rare), if you have some way to get the split part outside the unit. unlikely though. e.g. http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-nsw/portable+mistral+split/k0l30…

Talk to a professional. They might know how to do it

  • Subscribed! I am also in the same pickle and don't know how I am going to survive yet another Summer. We have lower than average ceilings and surrounded by cement driveway to the west … of an evening it is terrible (Melbourne suburbia). I put up an umbrella near the front door for some shade; does help a wee bit. Have already suggested to owner that I would pay extra rent to cover unit and he is just not interested. Only option seems to be to move. If those portable units were truly portable then I would buy one; just don't know where or how to set those outlet pipes to. We don't even have a ceiling fan here either. I may have to purchase an evaporative cooler as a last resort … In Cairns I used to fill it with frozen water and ice cubes … it does help if you can keep up the supply (better than nothing at all).

I put box air con into my flats 2 bedroom windows without telling my landlord. NOT recommended! This was after several failed tropical summers with the portable air conditioners. In the end we got permission to pay the full cost of a split system which will be cheaper in the long run than running 2 box air cons all day to cool the whole flat. There just isn't any reasonable alternative for effective cooling. Good luck!
