PlayStation 3 - model, pricing, games?

So I'm thinking of getting a PS3 soon. I missed the ~$170 12GB deals at Big W and Dick Smith recently so now looking to wait until the local PS4 launch for a bargain. Which version (hard drive size? super slim?) should I get if I just want to play a few games, and what sort of price would be a good deal?

I don't mind buying games second hand and might look at gumtree after the launch, but are there good places (physical/online) to get games, and will games from anywhere work on a local console?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

  • Eb games has a really good deal on now for PS3 (https://ebgames.com.au/ps3-999961-New-500GB-PlayStation-3--3…)

I'd really suggest getting something larger than 12GB, because if you sign up for Playstation Plus right now you can download:

    • Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
    • Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams
    • Remember Me
    • XCOM: Enemy Unknown
    • Little Big Planet Karting
    • Uncharted 3
    • Jak and Daxter Trilogy HD

(You don't have to download them all at once, you can "purchase" them for free and it will start downloading them, you can stop and download them later)

EDIT: Playstation Plus December games (Combination of PS3/PS4/PS VITA): (http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2013/11/13/playstation-plus-i…)

and will games from anywhere work on a local console?

Yes, except DLC is region locked, so if you buy a US copy of a PS3 game, to purchase the DLC you would have to make a US PSN account.

I think I'm mostly correct here, I really only started using my PS3 (for games) about 2 or so months ago.

    Hope this helps. :)

  • I'd agree with the 500GB over 12GB, however you can buy the 12gb and install your own hard drive of variable size. The install is pretty straight forward, but you will need to buy a bracket (http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/game/ps3/ps3-hard-drive-mount…) in addition to a 2.5" hard drive.

As for games, if you want second hand some bargains can be had from EB and JB, or online options for new. www.game.co.uk can yield some bargains, or you can check out one of the comparison sites, e.g. www.gamecafe.com.au, www.savemi.com.au

    • The cash converters webstore is an awesome source of cheap preowned games, I think I bought about half my ps3 collection from there. They have quite a lot of games (sometimes including quite recent releases) for around $10-15 unlike the 300 year old games that EB usually throw out at that price.

  • Thanks all for the suggestions. If I can get a hard drive and bracket for approx $60 I will probably buy the 12gb console and install the hard drive and buy games online or preowned.

How much should I expect to pay for a 12gb: should I just buy it if available at $170?

  • So is $178 for the 12gb model any good? I am wanting to buy a new PS3 to replace my dying 60gb one (horrendous fan speeds, even on XBMC). I don't think I need any games as such, I'll just buy the caddy and a HDD

    • if you can find the 2nd version just the normal slim one I'd recommend that. I got the super slim and took it back the next day to exchange for a standard slim. Much quieter and nicer product

      • Is there a big difference in sound? The super slims look pretty sweet.. maybe I'll have to suss out an EB for a decent price.

        • well I don't know if mine was just faulty or not but the disc spinning up and down was terribly annoying, and I'm not someone who complains about sound because I've always get my stereo on loud.

You can hear it with certain games with the standard slim spinning the discs faster/slower but on the ss it was ridiculous

  • were u also looking for accessories to go with the ps3 e.g. eye camera, guitar hero , DJ etc.
    ???
