Qantas Frequent Flyer Card now comes with Debit Card (aka Qantas Cash)

Just a heads up, If your Qantas Frequent flyer card is due for expiry, they'll send you out a new card with a mastercard debit card built in. After reading the PDS, i wanted to point out a few things (save you the time).

  • The card can (allegedly) be used to sign in at the airport (using the RFID technology)
  • It's not activated out of the envelope, you need to go online, agree to their T&Cs before the debit part of the card is activated.
  • It is run through Heritage bank limited.
  • The fees are pretty average, $1.95 (minimum) fee + 3% of the transaction value + (whatever mastercards conversion rate is)
  • Monthly Inactivity fee of $1, No Bpay fee for deposits.
  • PDS here: https://www.qantascash.com/media/pds/qantas-cash-long-form-p…
  • Although i would like to say 'destroy your card' - if you change your mind down the line (or qantas design a very good check in system with the card) - it will cost you $10 to replace (or 1k points)

TLDR: There are much better cards out there.

Comments

  • Agree. Poor value.

  • I somehow received that card in the mail despite not requesting for it, and I dont think my current QFF is expiring?? Strange! Think I'll cut the card up.. thanks for the heads up!

    • My bet is Qantas are getting kick backs on signing people up to the card. Keep in mind it's not a debit card until you activate it. You can also use it to check in on domestic flights. Still need your seat number, so it's kind of redundant

EDIT: also costs $10 if you want a replacement card down the line

    • I think they are giving the card to everyone. It replaces the old card.

Don't cut the card-up. It also has that Qantas quick check-in technology. Just don't activate the debit card side.

  • Same as VA. New members seem to get the Virgin Travel Cards on the back of their membership card.

Not really the best value for both, but I do love the Qantas TV ad for this card.
