Canon EOS 100D questions

I'm thinking of buying one of these soon as my first DSLR. I have two questions before I do - firstly, how does it compare to the 700D? It uses the same sensor and seems fairly comparable in features, but is smaller and lighter. Am I missing out on much by buying the 100D? Secondly, I enjoy wildlife photography, especially pictures of birds. My current camera is a superzoom compact with a 24-720 mm full-frame equivalent lens, which I use a lot at the telephoto end. Would I be better off buying the 100D as a twin lens kit with the 55-250 mm lens, or separately buying a longer zoom lens and the single lens kit? Any advice is appreciated, and cheap options or current deals for long zoom lenses or the 100D itself would be awesome.

  • I would concentrate a lot on the lens you are looking at. The faster the lens, I.e. lower F stop, the better. You will find that with larger range lenses that are cheaper, that close to 200mm will have a f stop of 5.6 or higher, which restricts the speed of shutter for taking the photo.

I am a Nikon man, but was looking at the 70D for my sister in law, as she is a Canon lady, and the 100D was secondary.

  • Hi Dick,

Here are some specs for both the 100D and the 700D. Firstly, the 100D……

18MP CMOS, Live View, DiG!C5, 9-pt AF, 4fps, 3” high res touch, screen LCD, ISO 100-12,800 (expandable to 25,600),Full HD Movie, integrated Cleaning System, 7 Creative Filters, 14 bit,63 zone metering, 1/4000 sec max shutter speed, aluminium & polycarbonate, HDMI, SD/SDHC/SDXC/UHS-1, LP-E12 Battery

    700D…….

18MP CMOS, Live View, DiG!C 5, 9-pt AF (all cross type), 5fps,3”high res vari-angle touch LCD, ISO 100-12,800 (expandable to 25,600), Full HD Movie, integrated Cleaning System, 7 Creative Filters, 14 bit, 63 zone metering, wireless flash control, 1/4000 sec max shutter speed, stainless steel & polycarbonate, HDMI, SD/SDHC/SDXC/UHS-1, LP-E8 Battery

My choice will be the 700D. From the above, it has…..
    * 5FPS V's 4FPS. ever so slightly faster, which is probably good for wildlife. HOwever, i would recommend the f2.8 lens to capture fast motion sharper, especially in low light. (Maybe someone can correct me on this. Being APS-C and not full frame, a f2.8 is not truely a f2.8 due to the magnification?)

    • Vari-angle V's Non

    • Stainless Steel & Polycarbonate V's aluminium & polycarbonate.

I believe The Good Guys have the 700D Twin, at a $897 from memory. I believe that it also comes with a $150 Cashback from Canon, which makes it $747 for Aussie stock plus, Canon have now implemented 2 year warranty which is fantastic.

When you compare V's grey market, take Kogan for example for the 700D TwinKit.

His price is $849. His delivery fee is ususally $39 so $888 with 1 year NON genuine warranty.

Your better off to buy local by about 18% in this example.

I think that the Good Guys price reverts back to usual tomorrow, from memory.

Sorry with all the info mate, hopefully i havent put you to sleep.

Hope it helps and good luck.
