Need alternative to gmail

Don't know where else to ask this as I couldn't find a suitable category on Whirlpool.

I've used Thunderbird to access gmail for a few years. But recently they changed something. Now every email account on my system shows there are new messages available, when there are none.

i.e. When you delete or move a message to another folder, it shows up as an unread message. Then you have to expand each email account, find the folder with the 'new' (old) message, right-click on the folder and select "Mark folder read".

I'm just wasting time checking for 'new' email that isn't there, and marking folders as read. Does anyone know for sure, is there another email provider I can access using IMAP/POP3, that will LEAVE an email as 'read' after you read it?

FWIW, I use Thunderbird to access my gmail. I leave messages on the server. And I have no problems.

Hm, thanks… Do you use POP3 or IMAP? (If you don't know where that is, right-click on the email account, select SETTINGS, click on SERVER SETTINGS and next to SERVER TYPE it says which one it is.)

  • Edit: Nevermind, there is a setting in gmail, but it is only for POP.

Edit2: Wait you didn't say if you are using POP, I assumed IMAP. If it is POP, log into gmail and check the POP settings are to mark as read.

    • Yeah, I'm using IMAP… I formatted the HDD and reinstalled WinXP. Gmail have changed how you access email a couple of time in the years I've had XP installed, so I went to the site for the settings. They give you a short description of the difference between the two and I chose IMAP. Maybe I should rethink that.

      Thanks!

  • I have used POP3 Gmail through Thunderbird for years, and continue to do so. Haven't noticed a change like you are describing. Maybe there is an easier fix than changing your email address? Cause that is usually a pain (depending on the use of the account).

  • i have the exactly same problem ! i was going to change email clients!
i use imap and it is read in the main section then have to go down to the gmail button and click expand and then click on the email again, generally twice.
    annoying.

    • Yes, that's it… and sometimes you expand the folders to mark the email as read yourself, and it suddenly changes itself - after showing there's a new message for hours!

  • are you using imap? by default, thunderbird only checks the inbox folder for new messages. you can tweak some settings in thunderbird to check all folders.

  • An alternative to gmail I've been using the same two accounts for about 10 years is gmx.net
Avoid the USA one (gmx.com) it's slow and faulty. Use google translater to translate the german text to signup and setup your account settings and extra email addresses. Then you can smtp & pop mail with any client, without ever logging into gmx.net again if you like.
It's free and very reliable but its speed is throttled. Also you have a choice of maybe 100 different addresses (after the @ sign) which I prefer.
Gmx.net was around long before gmail, who frankly I don't trust with anything.
Anyway a good longterm alternative for email.

    • Thanks, I'll have a look.

A thank you to everyone who replied. :-)
