They must be getting their percentage algorithms from woolworths.

  • +1

    AWesome.. was waiting for one..!!

had bought an ALDI one 6 months back for the same price and it is shit. (cannot even return it as no receipt - went in washing machine :-(…

I bet bluetooth will be sooo much better on these than the ALDI ones.

    • +1

what was wrong with aldi one?

    • Under ACL Consumer Guarantees, you don't need a receipt to return it.

    • +6

Probably shouldn't put your head unit in the washing machine.

    • Just installed this Sony in the wife's car. Very good unit, also installed the aldi in mine a few months back. The Bluetooth though is about the same - lots of hum at high volumes same as the aldi. The sony has one feature I would like in the aldi - that the clock stays on display, otherwise I put them as about equal. Sd slot in the aldi is a plus to it, sony has a lot more features with the bluetooth though, phonebook display and much more I havnt worked out yet but for me I only want to receive calls not make calls.

  • so this doesn't support cds? that's pretty expensive then..

since there is some that has all these features plus cd

    Also no SD/microsd card support?

    • +4

CDs?! You'll be asking for 8-track next. Lack of DVB is more of a problem.

For micro-SD, you can get a miniture USB card-reader that only protrudes a tiny bit from the USB socket.
But yes, it really should have an SD slot.

      • +1

Buy a Cruzer FIT drive instead. No more expensive than a micro-SDHC card, same size as your miniature SD reader, and guaranteed compatibility with this radio/media player. Also easier to copy files onto (no reader required, just plug it straight into your PC).

        • Thanks! got one. The micro-reader does not allow the cover to slide down, though the cover is hidden inside when open, so not ugly.

      • Yes, I am well aware the cd is not used as much…
but some people still use them like some parents/grandparents

So the lack of cd at this price is not as cheap
considering there are some players that has all this plus more..

        ie..
        -cd player
        -sd card
        -bluetooth
        -usb port
        -aux port etc..

So sony's high rrp makes you think $79 is a bargain price..when it fact it should be rrp $79 etc..
since they have less internal parts = ie less manufacturing cost..

sd port allows you to hide it, which makes it look better than having a usb sticking out..

        • considering there are some players that has all this plus more..

          please tell!

        • It's the Bluetooth that makes this unit a bargain. Bluetooth mechless units usually only go down to ~$100 when on special, and ones with cd drives start at ~$129 when on sale.

        • -2

yes but this unit lacks SD slot
which means you will have a usb flashdrive or reader forever sticking out of your player..

which makes it not look nice..

also you need to be more careful moving your hands around that area, incase you hit the usb flash drive.

          ===
yes, you can stream music via bluetooth
but then you will be wasting battery life on your phone..
and if your phone battery dies, you will have no music collection vs having an internal SD card slot.

And you don't always want to connect your phone to bluetooth..

          ==
So all I am saying is the high RRP for a product that lacks many more internal parts is rip of..
          -SD card slot
          -cd player
          -aux port
It should have been price RRP lower at maybe rrp $80

Also some older generation like parents/grandparents want a CD player..

  • Will this automatically connect and disconnect the PHF bluetooth when the car is started and stopped?

I keep forgetting to turn the bluetooth off when I park my car, and it stays connected while inside.

    • This isn't like a stand-alone bluetooth hands free, it doesn't have a battery in it.

So whan you turn your car off and remove the ignition key, the unit will lose power, and any bluetooth connections will be dropped.

This is an EXCELLENT price for anyone wanting to add "proper" bluetooth to their car.

      • Car-radios generally have an alway-on connection to the car battery.
My radio will turn off when the key is removed, but you just press a button to turn it back on.

So with this bluetooth, a good design would stay connected if a call is in progress, but otherwise turn off when the engine stops.

Anyway, sounds like this is just what I want, given that units with DAB+ are still too expensive to justify.

        • Whether to drop a current bluetooth call doesn't need to be designed into the radio, and the one I have (JVC brand) doesn't behave that way.

Turn your ignition off by turning the key to the accessory position = keep the unit turned on, call continues. Will revert to playing music when the call ends.

Turn your key all the way to the "off" position = stereo turns off, and bluetooth is dropped, irrespective of whether you are on a call or not. If you are on a call, I think the unit makes a "boop" tone as it turns off, to warn that you have to revert to using the phone directly.

Being able to turn the stereo on without a key in the ignition seems a dangerous thing to me. The kids could turn the stereo on and forget, and you discover the car's battery is flat the next day. Neither my Honda nor Toyota has this feature, I just tried it, perhaps it is your car that is unusual? I think the always-on battery connection is usually so the radio can "remember" the radio station frequencies.

        • perhaps it is your car that is unusual?

          Falcon. Common as mud :)

        • Not sure what year Falcons, but definitely BA onwards you can turn the radio on for up to 30 minutes after the car's been switched off, or something to that effect. It's in the manual.

  • remember that if you have steering wheel controls, you'll need to wire in a separate controller for that too (PAC-SWI).

  • This is seriously good price. Staticice is 158.00 Another price check below. $138.00

+1'ed. Only letting go because anticipating even better deals around the Christmas time.

  • Bought this from JB about 9 months ago for $99 really good for the price, I use bluetooth most of the time, haven't even touched the usb and the aux is what you would expect it to be. Also for me the fact there is no cd drive is a plus, it makes it physically smaller and who actually uses them anymore. For the price I definitely recommend people to buy it if they need a new one.

    • +1

Never heard of the brand. Zero google hits on that model.
Scathing reviews of other car radios by that brand. No thanks.

    • +1 to above comment by manic.

You can buy similar no-name car stereos on ebay for 20-30 bucks delivered. But no thanks.

What about this one? Any good? Looking to replace my stock car CD player.

  • sounds great… been keeping my eye out for something at a good price in this space for a while.

the next thing for me would be the install (not being handy enough to attempt myself)

can anyone recommend a good installer somewhere in Eastern suburbs of Melbourne?

    • Installation is easy. Just remove the console, old stereo (secured by 4 screws) and then put the new one in and plug in the connector. Just need to figure out how to open the console. Every car's different. Mine is mounted by two screws and needs pressing at the top and then clips disengage. Check you car service manual if you have it.

i bought a single DIN Sony unit with CD , USB and bluetooth etc and RRP was $189. With JB discount day a few months ago got it for $128.

For a mechless Sony unit, this is a bloody good price for a decent brand.

In my opinion those of you complaining about the price are kidding yourselves.

  • +1 for this deal… even though it's a Sony ;)

I just bought a generic Chinese Mechless unit for a non-car project I'm working on for $43 Shipped (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/181071223865?ssPageName=STRK:MEWN…). It's a pussbox for sure but after a lot of research it seemed to be the cheapest Mechless unit available with a proper TDA Amp IC and a couple of other basic features those sub-$40 eBay units don't have. I was also looking for a unit with Bluetooth even though it wasn't an essential feature for the application but even the decent cheapie generics with BT started at around $80-$85 so this Sony is exceptional value!

  • +2

Thanks OP. Bought 1. Now its time to buy a car.

  • Bought one. Installed and its working great. Mine came with free 4gb Sony slim Usb stick.

  • I'm worried about the removable faceplate. Should I glue it in so it does not get stolen? :-)

meh - I always leave the GPS in, and nobody ever touched that. touch wood.

  • does it have radio?

    • +1

yes there is radio but with a lame memory of 4 on unit and 6 on remote

      • 4 buttons, but 3 FM and 2 AM sets, so 20 stations on unit.

  • Think I'm going to buy this. I have an old CD walkman that I can keep in the glove box, and hook up via aux and cigarette lighter for those rare cases that someone wants to play a CD.

  • Works great with Nokia, but on android 4.1 phone, Phonebook and call history not working (PBAP?)
Might need a 3rd party app to fix it.

    • Big thanks to theearth for this post.
So much better than my old Nokia car handsfree, and crappy MP3-FM-transmitter.

      • +1

Yes same here just got it installed today
We should celebrate by burning our CDs

        Twice burnt

        • Microwave them is best :)
