Is love of OzBargain healthy?

I must admit to checking this site multiple times daily. On the one hand, I do find lots of good stuff and some incredible deals. I find the comments very useful in helping to know what not to buy. And, as much as anything I enjoy the humour and banter. On the other hand, I often wonder to myself, is it healthy to be so interested in finding a bargain? Yes, saving money is a good thing, but why I am so interested in getting 10% or 20% off of my next pair of jeans, or whatever the deal is? Is it greed? Surely I could spend my time more productively.

Anyway, I'm sure my dedication to Ozbargain will not fade, but I thought I would ask other ozbargainers whether they ever feel the same way.

Meh, you'll get over it and be able to decide in a split second whether a thread is worth following.

  • Surely I could spend my time more productively

If you do spend some time saving money on items, then that time is not wasted, is it ?

    • Not wasted, but what is the opportunity cost?

Is it better to save money on items, or, for example, do something else such as (hypothetically speaking) learn a language, read a book, go for a walk etc.

      • That's up to you to decide. If you have no other opportunities, then there's nothing wrong with surfing OzB. Nowadays surfing on a smartphone seems to be a boredom killer when you are waiting in queues, etc.

While I do love people to stick around and participate in this community, we are also constantly developing features to let "passive users" to maximise the usefulness of OzBargain. You don't need to refreshing OzBargain all the time (heaven forbids), and can subscribe to

    • Daily newsletters (once a day summary of deals from previous 24 hours)
    • Front page notifications (sent out as soon as a deal reaches front-page)
    • Category or store notifications (sent out as soon as a new deal is posted)

With our new faster search backend, I am also currently developing "search alert" so you can get notified via email when something matches your search criteria. That should hopefully be available before new year. That means passive users can just wait for us to notify you whenever something interesting turns up. Less fun, but hopefully will cost you less time.
