Multiple SSL Certificates (not shared)

I am setting up 5+ e-commerce sites, each with their own domain, using Wordpress and Woocommerce. My chosen merchant service requires me to have an SSL certificate for each domain.

Is there a provider that sells bulk SSL certificates at discounted rates? The cheapest I can find is USD 9.49 per year per domain for RapidSSL: https://www.namecheap.com/ssl-certificates/geotrust-ssl-cert…

Note: the sites will be built and launched one after the other so a UCC multi-domain certificate (like this http://www.startssl.com/?app=35) isn't suitable since the domains are fixed at issuance. I think I am really looking for a provider that can sell me multiple separate SSL certificates cheaply.

EDIT: I found Comodo PositiveSSL 5 year certificates here for USD 3.05 / year: https://www.gogetssl.com/domain-validation/comodo-positive-s…

EDIT2: I found Comodo PositiveSSL 1 year certificates for USD 3.95: https://cheapsslsecurity.com/comodo/positivessl.html - in case any OzBargainer is interested. This is pretty cheap for a single SSL Cert with 1 year licence.

  • These are very cheap (PositiveSSL ones for $3.05/year). Bought a PositiveSSL one from Namecheap back in June for $8.95/year :( I paid 3 years because I hate the hassle of re-generating the CSR, updating the certificate, etc

    • Hi Scotty, I am a newbie at SSL - how difficult is the renewal process (re-generating the CSR, updating the certificate, etc)?

Was thinking of just getting 1 year SSL cert because I'm not sure if these sites will be successful or not, but if the renewal process is a major hassle then maybe I'll just go for the 5 year option straight away.

It's not much hassle to renewing/buying new SSL.

For the services that I intend to run for quite a while I usually just buy 3-5 years. As of re-generating the CSR, it's just one openssl command (assuming you have access to the private key), making sure everything filled out correctly, posting the CSR to the site and they'll email you back the cert. Takes a few minutes to do — so maybe not a hassle, but certainly something you need to remember.

When you start managing multiple sites, domains, certificates, etc — just need to remember and set reminder on all the expiry dates. I have seen lots of SSL expired sites over the years, even some large sites.

        • Thanks for the tips all

  • Thank you for the info, I actually needed this myself in a couple of days, this saves me a lot of time.

On a side note for a client with 200+ ecommerce websites we have created our own merchant gateway. All the payments are on 1 domain but the visitor does not notice I believe. The theme of the website is brought over to the payment domain and we change all the links to match the initial domain. This allows us to only have 1 certificate on 1 domain, the rest of the domains do not need it. Consider it Paypal where you can change everything about the look of the page. When you get to a great number of ecommerce sites you can consider this as an alternative to buying all those certificates.

The reason why we did this is to both keep the costs down for him and to allow him to create his own websites very quick (part of the requirements). He buys the domain, points it to our server, he has a wizard that creates the website for him and he is ready to go.

    • You built your own customisable merchant gateway? My hats off to you, that is impressive. Have you considered white labelling that product and selling it publicly. Those products are not cheap.

      • It is not ready for that yet, right now it is still based on the fact that everything runs from the same server and that the gateway has access to the DB of the website or to the theme of the website (to get the template and integrate the CC form). To make it work seamlessly for any website right now it is out of the scope and probably other big companies are offering that already. It would require soem CURL magic.

Regarding the whitelabeling that is already included in the product. I am working on a version of it in my free time. I do not like the approach that my company is using and I cannot convince my boss to try something else :(.

          I hear that!

Good luck! It's how some great products started.
