Lowest price ever. Much cheaper than the Black Friday deal on Amazon UK yesterday which was 23GBP + 12.8 postage.

This player mostly beats out iPods in terms of objective, measured audio performance:
http://nwavguy.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/sansa-clip-measured.h…

Low output impedance makes it especially good for low impedance IEMs.

MicroSD slot, long battery life, Rockbox support.

Would have been a good deal about 5 years ago…

    I loved my Sansa… RIP…

    • What happened?

      • Jv brodened it.

I bought a LG mobile phone for $30 as a backup audio player. Works awesome & has Wifi.

    • +1

Can you install Rockbox on it though ?

  • +1

It might be good for an audiophile but at this price you may as well get an android phone.

    • +3

The issue with using a phone as an MP3 player is the short battery life.

      • +1

        Depends on the phone.

I get close to a week of music playback on my old iP4 with screen/wifi/3g off and use my Note II for 4+ hours a day (screen off, held awake, wifi + 4G on and about 1-2 hours of screen on time), and it's rare that I get below 50% after a day before I charge (3100mAh battery though).

Turning off data doesn't really make such a difference to the battery life with Android I've found. I can't get more than 30 hours of music playback on the Note II, and read similar comments from other Android phone users.

Also a lot of Android phones limit the peak db output on the 3.5mm jack, Apple used to also as per EU regulations but faced a backlash and told the EU to screw themselves and continue to this day to sell media players around the world that exceed volume levels. With Android you can download some applications that allow higher output on the 3.5mm jack (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.omegacent…), but it doesn't work with PowerAmp :(

Can't beat the fruit for music.

        • Actually Apple didn't fully tell the EU to go screw themselves, they do have a volume limiter in the music settings so you can manually set the max limit.

Although its kind of ironic in a way cause the loudspeaker sucks on the iPhone 4 compared with the 3GS (my wifes phone can be at least twice as loud as mine), been shitting me for years, so the limit the loudspeaker but make it optional to limit the headphone.

      • ..and the size

  • I would throw it at a wall in frustration in 10 sec of searching for a song with that interface.

I have the 4Gb version of this and it's great. I've a 32Gb msd card tacked onto it.

I'd thought I could use my phone as my mp3 player,
but like EarlyBird says above, the battery life is of the phone is bad enough
without using it as an mp3 player.

I dont mind the interface either. It's pretty usable.
Note that I also owned a Apple Nano and I like the fact
that I dont need to use iTunes to transfer music onto it.

If you are in the market for an mp3 player, I'd recommend this model.

    • How is the recording quality for Sansa?
I'm thinking of getting this to record band practice sessions - thoughts?

  • had to press the jack really hard till click sound heard. Other than this everything is good.

  • I own a sansa fuze + which is essentially the same audio hardware wise (produces the same results on an audio spectrum analyzer) but with a dodgy trackpad. It's got good audio quality and for the price and exandable memory size, you can't get better value than this.

For comparison to smartphones, audio quality-wise it obliterates my old galaxy s 2, and is on par with or slightly better than my xperia z. Ditto my now dead 5th gen ipod classic/video.

And also like I mentioned in another comment, you can put rockbox on these bad boys which is basically a custom rom for MP3 players. Lets you put some emulators and stuff on there too which is pretty neat. http://www.rockbox.org/

  • Just bought one. Thanks OP :)

  • Thanks OP. I picked one up too.

  • Grab them while they are still being sold! To my ears they around the same sound quality as the newer iPods, but the Sansa is very good value. Don't forget to I install the Rockbox firmware as stock firmware is crap.

Still the best bang-for-buck DAP. Using it with rockbox and a 64GB microSD card.

It's nice to have dedicated devices, especially this one since it has physical buttons.

  • +5

I hear the Sansa is not compatible with the Joffrey through.

  • If these have clips to hold them onto, eg, shirt collars, they can also be used to record talks & interviews in noisy venues, as is shown by the folks WNO use such devices to record audio for later mixing into YouTube videos of Energy from Thorium (search YouTube for Thorium or Thorium remix), eg in buses, restaurants, etc.

I have one of these and it is awesome for running, gym etc. So small and light - clip it to your waistband and don't even notice it is there. Try doing that with a smartphone

  • Here's a technical review that looks at its sound quality.
You don't buy this for the interface, you buy it primarily for the sound quality followed by its light weight, small size, low cost, and long battery life.

  • Do yourself a favour and spend the extra $5 for a clip zip. The clips on these things break so easily.

    • So the clips break easy on the clip +? Clips are stronger on the Zip?

      • From my googling, the reverse is true.

      • I've had both players. The clip on the plus breaks quite easily.

  • I like that it has physical buttons but I wish the screen was bigger and the buttons are smaller.

    • that's exactly what they did to the clip+ to make the clip zip!!!

      • And it's only $5 extra (50% off as opposed to 40% off for the Clip+). I'm considering canceling and getting that one instead.

        Thanks for the heads up.

        • Sorry guys which would be better the clip zip or the the clip +? Which ones clips break easy? Is the clip zip an improved clip zip with a better clip. Yeh the clip zip is only $5 more than the clip+, seems to be the better option :)

        • From my googling, the clip+ has better feedback than the zip.

          Googled clip+ vs zip.

        • +1

I have no idea, but I've read that with the Zip, the screen only displays the album art during playback. It does not show you track info or how much time has elapsed, only a progress bar. Yes the screen is bigger, but unless you're the kind that appreciates album art, it's useless. I'd rather have more practical information.

For that reason I went with the Clip+. That and the fact that Amazon shipped it already, which is the fastest shipping I've ever seen Amazon do in the 8 years or so that I've been shopping there (it normally takes days before they decide to ship it, this time only hours).

        • Now I dont know wether to go the ZIP or the +. Its for the missus for running, so the + is probably fine and she wouldnt need a color screen I think.
Also have to get one for my 8yo son. Looking at something like a ipod nano with color screen, possibly camera and play videos. Looking at the sony walkmans. Anyone recommend them or something else along those lines?

  • For those who were unaware - this has nothing to do with Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones. I thought it did, but I was wrong.

  • Perfect running companion. I've had two over the last 7 years. Both were treated fairly roughly - tossed in the bottom of my sports bag. The first was given to a mate when I picked up the new Sansa clip+. The Sansa Clip+ screen died after about 3 years of use. I think this is due to sweat build-up on the open ports (headphone jack, usb). I managed to open it up and clean out electronics and got another 3 months use out of it before it was stolen on a London train… Thanks OP - purchased & replaced my favourite electronic item I would never leave the house with.

  • I have one of these.

The interface is small which sucks a bit but it's easy to use so that can be forgiven. Everything else about this player is pretty impressive. Battery runtime, music quality, voice recording, simplicity, etc.
Not sure about the price though…

Take note that using these mp3 players as an auxiliary input in car stereos will require the original firmware. Rockbox will not work.

  • I just got mine.. This thing is tiny. It's iPod Shuffle sized. You couldn't tell from the pics, I assumed it was pocket sized.
