What's a good & simple USB media player?

We're looking to get a media player for my Grandmother for christmas so she can watch videos off a USB flash drive.
It doesn't need internet capabilities (she wouldn't use it, at all).

  • It needs to play a 1080p files
  • It needs to support formats such as (and I know some are just containers): mp4, mkv, mov, avi
  • It needs to be simple!

Not too worried about pricing but preferably not too much, it would just be for 1-2 hours or so worth of video here and there (twice a week or so).

I've thought about doing a custom UI on a RaspberryPi but it seems like more effort than it's worth :P

WD Live Gen 3. Plays 25GB mkv's, so it will play close to everything. Does not support DTS-MA/HD Audio so if you have fancy 7.1 audio look elsewhere. A Pi is pffft.

  • I had a WD Live Gen 3 (thanks to an awesome deal here) but it's packed with features.
She'll only be using the regular output of her Samsung TV speakers. Is there anything a bit lighter in terms of functionality?

  • Probably go for Minix Neo G4. It's very stable, UI is simple and cheap too.

  • I can plug a usb into and play movies with my samsung TV, no need for media player, its inbuilt

    • Sadly hers doesn't support that :/
