Be careful with magazine subscriptions.

Hi there,

I ordered a Better Homes and Gardens subscription for the girlfriend, located at: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/9392 with the intention of cancelling after I received the third magazine for cheap. However, I emailed their 'customer service' people the other day after receiving the third copy and now they're telling me that my subscription won't expire until September '09!! Can they do this? There seems to be nothing in their terms and conditions! Or would I be better off ringing my credit card company and stopping any payments from them?

I just don't want other OzBargainers getting caught up in traps like this! Thanks.

  • The thread you links says they sent an email:

Your selection of our direct debit option ensures your subscription will only expire should you decide to cancel. Please be aware your credit card will be automatically debited $3 for the first 3 issues, then only $14.80 per quarter after that unless you decide to cancel or your credit card details change.

    Thank you for your subscription.

Maybe forward them that email or get contact someone on that thread for a copy of the email.

  • I've subscribed to the three-month trials of Men's Health and Better Homes and Gardens, I cancelled both without having to pay more than $3.

For Men's Health, I called them after receiving the third issue (but way before receiving the 4th), only to be told that my credit card has already been charged. I then asked for a refund since I haven't received the 4th magazine yet. They were happy to do so, and I receive a cheque in the mail a couple of weeks later.

For Better Homes and Gardens, the same thing, but this time they haven't charged my credit card and it was straight forward as the guy just cancelled it for me.

For aldog, if you haven't received your 4th magazine, you should be able to cancel the subscription without too much trouble. Give them a call and ask for refund.

  • I didn't manage my subscription too well, but I got a refund. :P

I received a letter saying that I could manage it online, so when the subscription expired and I couldn't log on to cancel it, I thought nothing more of it. And then when I got charged for the next 3 issues, I emailed them and asked for a refund. Got a cheque in the mail a few weeks later.

  • Well we rang them up and the lady told us that it expires in Setptember, but we said that we want it to expire now. After her getting quite rude she eventually gave us the credit. It certainly pays to phone! Thanks for all the thoughts!
