Xperia Z or Nexus 5

Getting ready to upgrade from my Samsung Galaxy Nexus but can't decide on which phone.

I like the water resistance, shock proof toughness of the Xperia Z family plus the expandable memory, but I have trouble working out the hierarchy of the different models to find the best deal.

I like the Nexus 5 for price and general specs, but am worried about battery life and no expandable memory.

I know the Nexus 5 is at least $100 cheaper, but all you have to do is get your phone wet once (I ride a motorbike and the pocket isn't waterproof) or drop it and break the screen and the low price of the Nexus 5 is a moot point. Better camera specs on the Xperia too.

Any users of either phone got any thoughts on this?

Thanks

  • shock proof toughness of the Xperia Z

No such thing, it's only water resistance. Drop it and it might break like any other phone.

The Nexus 5 is faster, has a better screen and is smaller and more ergonomic (being rounded). It is also likely to be more durable since the back is plastic rather than glass.

The Xperia Z has as you mentioned microSD and water resistance as well as slightly better battery life.

I wouldn't want to rely on the water resistance though; there are reports of these phones dying due to water ingress in situations where they shouldn't and there's no guarantee they'll fix it for you.

  • i have a Xperia Z and battery life is dreadful for me. can't even last 24 hours. not too sure about the Z1.

    • I've had experience with an Xperia Z too, battery life can be pretty appalling.
Spec wise, it appears to be a very capable phone but at times it can be very laggy/unresponsive.
The colours on the Xperia Z aren't that great either, for some reason it appears washed out in comparison to the One, etc.

Between the two, I'd probably go for the Nexus 5.

      • Try stamina mode, its good for making the battery last

    • I have a z1. My battery life last 2 days and I watch movies in the train daily as I commute. That is after I turn on stamina mode and reduce screen brightness - i personally don't like bright screens anyway.

Camera is better than Nexus 5, my mate at work has a Nexus 5, so we compared. Screen wise, can't really tell a difference.

The Z1 does have heat issues when playing some games, but so far apart from the heat it doesn't seem to affect the performance. Good for winter :)

The new camera button in Z1 is really good and helps a lot. I can take pictures 1 handed with a huge phone like that, I would struggle if it didn't have that new button like the old z.

My wife's dropped it once in a concrete carpark from her lap as she exited out SUV, small ding in one corner, but otherwise no issues.

  • Thanks all. No negative comments on the Nexus 5? I've read the camera is average.

    • I own a Nexus 4, had a bad time of it and will not be buying a 5 (I went with Note 3 instead)

    • Camera on 4.4 was pretty mediocre. Apparently the 4.4.1 update fixes that.

  • It is kind of hard to judge because people compare the nexus 5 with other phones as if it was at the same price point but for the money the nexus 5 is a good buy. The camera got an update anyway and will probably get more and you can always make the battery more efficient with a kernel or something like that..

  • I'd advise against the Nexus 5. Here are 250+ (and growing) people that have complaints about the quality/durability of the screen

I think the problem with the Nexus is that they try too hard to keep the price down and it seems to effect the quality. I was smitten with my N4 at first, after a few months I officially hate the thing.

  • I was frustrated by the power usage of my Nexus 5 until I sat down and did my homework. Turned off a few things in the background, like GPS Tracking, and reduced the brightness settings. I am a moderate rather than a heavy user and it runs up to 2 days now. No probs so far, and having Qi charging is more of a plus that I thought, unbelievably convenient to use a Nokia charger on my bedside table.
