Te$tra Xmas contract renewals

So my Telstra contract is up on jan 5 2014 and unfortunately I am going to have to do another term with the big T.

My question is when is best to renewk with them, and any advice on getting a better deal?
My current contract is 60 for unlimited SMS, 600talk and 1.5gb data, plus my s2 phone repayments. All the new plans seem to be worse deals, any trick to get them to keep me on this plan and pay forward my hand set repayment.

It probably doesn't help that I would like to have the note 3 and am resigning myself to paying $77month for next two years of poorer rates as I am rural and only Telstra service works for me.l.

So what ozbargain wisdom exists for Telstra wrestling?

Thanks,
Matt

  • Where r u located?
I notice Optus and Vodafone have done some massive regional expansions in the past year or two.. might pay to check their coverage.
Given they offer far superior pricing and plans these days when compared with Telstra

  • Why not just call them and tell them you're considering switching at the end of your contract and ask whether they'll give it to you cheaper? Does Telstra have a customer retention team?

  • +1

Hi Matt, Your current Telstra phone plan will continue unchanged at your current rates (unlimited SMS, 600talk and 1.5gb data) unless you recontract. The MRO phone payments will automatically cease. If you want a new phone but want to keep your existing plan then just buy the phone outright and swap the sim over.

  • Hi Matt,
Exactly same boat as you, my S2 contract is expiring 28.12.2013. Rang Telstra and tried to get a better deal. The sales rep tried by speaking with his manager but could not. I explained that I didnt want to go down from 1.5 GB to 1GB and pay more. Try giving them a call, maybe you'll get a different response.
I'm gonna check out Virgin's and Voda's double data deal.

  • I agree, kogan have awesome mobiles from $200 but if your happy then stay with what you have OR go to a telstra reseller of 3G like telechoice (use this link and get a 12m contract http://www.telechoice.com.au/kogan-offers ) or aldi mobile sim, boost mobile (both prepaid)…

  • lethological - I am in Cairns but quite often am out of town so needed Telstra as well.

the Boost pre-paid network uses the telstra 3G network, so gets good coverage and is way cheap. $40 Ultd +3GB data (which you can use for tethering).

It doesn't do 4G but being rural qld I would think you probably don't have 4G in your area anyway.

  • I also heard that boost gets better access both in rates and area than the other resellers so it looks like I will be making the switch. Thanks rayjjj.

Now I'm off to find the best deal on a note 3. Just have to wait for my new Coles master to arrive so I can get price protection on it.
