Is McDonalds Getting Too Expensive?

I'll be comparing McDonald's flagship burger "The Big Mac" to Hungry Jacks's "The Whopper."

My local Big Mac costs $4.75 while the HJ's whopper would cost $5.95 for two burgers with the following coupon http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/110465/19136/scn_0001.p…. Some may argue that both burgers are near cost without the help of coupons, HJ's sends out their coupons by letter very often and many times you can find these coupons on the front counter.

For the cost of a small big mac meal, that will set me back a bit more than $8 dollars, I could go into to a cafe to buy a gourmet burger bundled with salad and a drink for only 2 dollars more.

  • McDonalds still make a decent % on their beef range, drinks and chips. The chicken ranges are a bit more tight. Price can be based a lot around the area where you live, especially around Australian cities.

You're not getting so much value with a Big Mac meal but when you start adding value menu items on top of meals or by them alone you start to get a bit of value. McDoubles at $2 are pretty decent.

If anyone is from Melbournes' east, check out 'Pickle Club' on Facebook. Really cheap McDonalds deals for certain stores, they're on hiatus until the end of December but if you have a look at the history it's decent. $2 McChicken, 2x McChickens + 2 Large Fries for $7.50.

The problem is their value menu items offer very little nutritional value.

It's McDonalds… If you want nutritional value you're looking in the wrong place.

        • Is it too much to ask for some tomato and lettuce?

          I don't think it is…

  • Sucks that there isn't a HJ around where I live within walking distance. Macca and KFC are available though

  • Agreed. While I usually avoid Maccas I recently went and grabbed an apple pie only to discover they are now over $2. A large sundae will also set you back $2.95 which is extortion considering that it's not even as much ice cream as 2xcones (60c) and a couple of squirts of topping.

    • I hadn't had hotcakes in like 10 years, and nearly died at the price when I ordered them again recently. Will go another 10 years probably, they were lukewarm at best and pretty terrible.

I usually go for the BBQ Cheese Double which is $2, then change the BBQ sauce for ketchup, 2 of those and you're full.

HJ & McD's suck for burgers. Spend the $6 at your local fish and chip shop and get a real burger with the lot. (It's probably healthier too)

    • +1

Actually the fish and chip shop burgers are likely more unhealthy then mcdonalds.

At least mcdonalds has all their nutritional values available for their food.

      • +3

atleast the fish and chip shop burgers taste like food though and there is no need to order extra food to satisfy a empty stomach

        • -1

          I agree with this.

Even food I cook at home will often be more unhealthy then mcdonalds, but yes at least it tastes like real food.

        • +1

What kind of food you cook at home??

  • +2

Why single out McDonalds on this? All processed crap-away food is too expensive.

    • +1

You honestly think $2.97 is too expensive for a Whopper? Good luck making it for the much.

      • -1

Since when do Whoppers cost $2.97 ?.

        • +1

@extract, try reading the first post? Or is that a bit too hard?

      • Good luck making it for the much.

I make my own all the time, and it's substantially healthier and doesn't taste like mayonnaise.

        • No shit. Where did I mention health?

        • No shit.

          Settle down PlainTurd.

  • I can't eat at Hungry Jacks after I got food poisoning from their mayonnaise.

Definitely Maccas get way too expensive now, i remember 5 years ago i can get medium quarter pounder meal for $6.50 and $2.50 for large coke, now they cost $8 and 3.5 respectively. The point of Maccas is cheap fast unhealthy food and they are kind of contradicting themselves now even some good asian food are being cheaper.

Good thing their soft cone is still very cheap and good snack.

but just wondering why some maccas have different prices for their product?

    • different owners charge different prices

For the price of the food you would expect at least not to be sick the next day.
If you are going to charge high prices we want a professional chef not a 13 year old throwing food together.

In Shanghai now, a LARGE McSpicy meal is 20 RMB ~ AU$3.75

As a Mcdonalds employee, when i'm getting half price, sure, i'll bite, but otherwise, unless it's really late and i'm really desperate, i rarely get McDonalds. HJ's vouchers, bbq chb's with letty tomato onions for $2, all the way

  • It is an absolute rip off and you cannot call it food, it tastes awful. You can get a Thai lunch in a restaurant with can of drink for $10, why would anyone go to MacD's.

    • +1

      it tastes awful

You are aware that different people do, in fact, have different tastes, right? Throwing out 'it tastes awful' as if it were objectively true is just silly.

  • I'm glad it is, now I have no reservations with avoiding it whilst seeing healthier options.

I would just like to add the McDonald's is the most successful\recognisable\popular\profitable restaurant ever. You go in there knowing what to expect, get it and are happy, just like everyone else dining there. They are doing everything better than everyone else - standards, jobs, charity, cost, catering for customers of all ages, meals of the day, specials etc.

    Now bring on the hate…

    • And Telstra are the most successful/recognisable/popular/profitable Telco in Australia.

What do they have in common? Monopoly establishment before competition.

    • Actually McDonalds has been on a steady decline for years. But don't let facts get in the way of your rant.

All that article proves is that Subway had more stores, as of 2011. Doesn't necessarily refute anything in regards to success, recognition, popularity of profitability. Also:

Despite the strong store presence, figures from market research firm IBIS World show that Subway's share of the $16.6bn takeaway food market in Australia based on revenue is about 2per cent. McDonald's has the biggest share at 19.5 per cent.

  • McDonalds is absolute garbage. the portions are tiny. the packaging sure is nice. the contents is really, really poor quality flavorless crud though. I literally feel sick after eating a quarter pounder meal or w/e. bleached white flour squish sugar bun, generic meat patty from a heater tub, loads of sugary salty wattery sauce, and some sliced pickle preserve. 10 bux. No thanks. The (fast food drive through) Burgers are Better at Hungry Jacks.
