Options of this watch (A watch by William Shatner and Egard)

I am on the fence to get this watch, it looks nice and its not bad price for the movement/type of watch it is and they have the retail price of $1,199USD for after the project finishes
but atm its $399 US so a big savings (true oz bargain fashion )

so thoughts? (other then why not get a cheap lcd watch or quarts watch)

I buy a few things off indiegogo and I am a WUS particularly for swiss Autos. There are loads of micro brand watch companies these days and since Swatch are now restricting access to their ETA movements, many have switched across to the Miyota movement. There are literally hundreds of different types of micro designs, I have a Magrette (from NZ) and a Hexa (from US) micro brand dive watches, both have Miyota movements I think. I have another on the way, forum watch from Watchuseek forums. There have been a few of the micro brands that have tried to use crowd funding to get themselves off the ground, these guys aren't the first.

If you are interested in Micro Brands have a look at the likes of:

Obris Morgan, Lum Tec, Prometheus, SAS, Armida, Stowa, Kemner, Halios and loads of others!!

For the watch in question, the case looks unique, haven't seen that shape before. Rest of the watch is pretty standard fair. $1200 is a bit steep I'd have thought compared to many other micro brands for a Miyota. Unless this thing is a cult classic like the Halios Laguna or the Prometheus Jellyfish I think they will struggle to sell them at $1200. At $399, from a watch perspective it is almost a beater, if you like the style go for it but I wouldn't expect it to be easy to sell on or flip if you become tired of it later down the line. I have found that my micro brand watches are much harder to sell when i become bored of them than my Omega, TAG etc watches.

It is a different style to the usual 'variation on a Rolex sub' type of diver's watch that normally dominates the Micro Watch scene. Refreshing and interesting but not sure if there are enough folks out there that want a watchface shaped like that.

Also….Roman Numerals…what's with that these guys haven't done their homework. Roman numerals never sell as well as Arabic numerals on watch faces.

  • here's my thoughts.. i tend to be very conservative

firstly, its a relatively unknown company

2ndly, its limited edition… limited to how many pieces? 500? 1,000? it doesnt say

3rdly, its not like a limited edition Rolex which is clearly 1 of 1,000 pieces (for example) which will hold value

4thly, modified Miyota 8S27… this is basically a Citizen movt.

for $400 I think its fine if you like the style and whatever

for $1,200 I'd think again but really, if you like it, buy it

you can spend $1,200 on a tissot or base Tag and its meh too

they are limited to 999 (for each style) which is listed in the project also the prototype pic has 001/999 listed too
I just got into looking for nice watches and don't know if I really want this or not… got a few days to decide I guess

    • I have quite a few 'limited edition' watches. Basically the guy making these can only afford to make 1000 of each type. To make a positive spin on it they call them 'limited edition'. Most of the Micro companies do this in fact many have a pre-order scheme where you sign up and pay a deposit 6 months or so before the watch is released. When it is nearly ready you pay the balance. As part of paying the deposit you get to choose your own serial number from the 'limited edition' list. My Hexa K500 Tactical PVD is #12, 1st Australian one on the list!

If you were buying an A Lange & Sohne rose gold tourbillion with moon phase and perpetual calendar, limited edition of 20, all hand made with a their own manufacture' movement inside and you were happy to stump up the $200K or so the limited edition might mean something. Similarly if you managed to get one of the limited edition runs of a famous collector watch like an Omega Bond Watch or a Rolex Sub/Milgaus/Explorer or an Omega Speedy Pro or a Blancpain 50 fathoms etc then the limited edition means something. Unless this watch is a revelation and becomes an instant classic it will probably, like most watches fade into obscurity and be replaced by another watch tragic's pet project soon after. There are some that become very popular, the Halios Laguna sold out very quickly and was a quick profit for some as the 2nd hand values were more than the original price because for those that missed out the online collector sales boards were the only way to get one.

All that said, if you like it and want to wear it go for it. Do so because you love the design and want to own one, not because you think it will be an investment. The Limited Edition wont mean anything unless this becomes a revelation and goes down in horological folklore as the watch that changed timekeeping etc. The Rolex Sub or GMT Master of its day!!!

If you are up for wasting countless hours obsessing over watches head over to watchuseek.com and ask a few questions over there.
