    I second this, well at least phones.

    I've always used my iPhone or Android phone for navigation in Australia and I'm sure I'd stick to it in Japan. Google maps all the way on both phones!

      Google maps is best but it is better to get some offline ones especially data in other countries could cost a lot more and/or could be patchy.

        You can download the maps for offline use… at least on android you can!

  If you got a Android device with GPS and Google play. Search for Map factor free beta and install. This is one of the best free navigators available. It is an off-line navigator and once you download the software and and the map you don't need an Internet connection. If you google for a place you have the option of finding it on-line, it automatically comes to the navigator.You have the option of getting the paid Tom Tom maps as well. But the free map is more than enough. You can download the map of he country you want and it remains on the SD card (Australia map 72mb). It uses the open street map source. I use it in Australia, Singapore and Sri Lanka. Never have to ask for a road if have this in your mobile. Lifetime Map updates available. Cheers.

  iPhone I used "citymaps2go". You download the
  whole map for offline use. I used it on an
  iPod touch all through rural Malaysia (driving) and it was better than any printed map I could find.
  I was able to navigate better with this than my local Malaysian relatives!

  I got it free but it might be a paid for app.
  Not as nice as google maps and no navigation but I recommend highly for a cheap offline map.
