Free Coles Brand Product?

Today I was in Coles and I asked an employee help to find the dips. When I got there he asked if I knew which one I wanted to buy. When I said that I didn't, he said he could give me the Coles Brand hommus dip for free as a chance to try it out. We went to the registers and BOOM free hommus.

I get the feeling they are doing this as a way to make people start buying their brand over competitors' brands. It seemed like it was a bit of a new thing, but also something that staff knew about. I think the guy who did it was a regular floor employee, not a manager or something.

So, rather interesting! Probably not a bargain because I'm not sure if you could replicate it, but has anybody else had this happen?

    Wait wait wait….

You had an employee, IN COLES, HELP YOU? That's the bargain right there.

Anyways, never seen this kind of thing but maybe they are pushing their brand a bit more or that particular employee was just nice.

    • Yes, you have to ask for help, some of them are helpful, some are not, its a hit and miss.

    • lol mafmouf, thats funny, i was gonna say, WAIT, COLES HAS STOCK?!?!

  • No I haven't. What was the brand called? "Coles Simply Less"? I have to pay for that.

Did the hummos scan as a price that was then made zero or did it scan as free?
Did you say the worker told you it was free?

    • It was the plain coles brand hommus, i think "Simply less" sounds about right.

The worker told me I could get it for free if I wanted - it was otherwise at marked price. He scanned it through then did something to make it free afterwards.

      • The Coles regular hummus and Coles Simply Less are two different products. IMO the Simply Less is nicer, it tastes better and contains less oil, although both are nice.

      • Thank you for replying.
What a shame it's not the typical policy because I always buy their hummos.

Wow - that's a new one! Good on you. Usually finding a coles or woollies "Team member" is extremely rare without having to go to the service desk & wait for someone to appear after 5 mins. or so

This is a new customer service initiative Coles are doing in their newer stores. Basically staff have the power to give you a free (normally Coles brand) product if a product you want is out of stock or if you make a complaint or something. Sounds like the staff member you encountered was a little too eager and just decided to give you a free product for a trial, but I don't believe this is official policy.

  • I've usually been able to find a Coles staff member when I need them and they have been very helpful. It usually happens in the freezer section when something I want looks like it is out of stock or is up really high and I can't reach it.

One of the customer service staff took me to the Christmas section where they were selling a special line of chocolates from the current catalogue. The stock hadn't been put out yet so the staff member went out the back to get me the three different varieties of chocolates I was after. I was very impressed.

I end up with free Coles products about once a month when the products scan at the wrong price. The staff at the service desk actually know me fairly well.
