What is so special about 'Genuine Havaianas Thongs' compared to the cheap $1.99 BigW/KMart thongs that look the same from the photo?

    • +12

If your BigW one can last more than one year of frequent use, I would not bother buying Havaianas.

I'm a loyal customer of havaianas for almost 40 years. Did try other brands, even the most expensive ones are not on par with the quality. The rubber compound on this one are of a much higher quality, they resist way longer to wear and tear and are more comfortable to wear as well.

      • Has it seriously been around for 40 years? Learn something new everyday.

      • I was surprised by the comfort compared to other brands and now that's the only brand I buy. I do find the slims more comfortable than the other styles though and it looks as though very few, if any, of this style will be available. It's a good buy.

They have the black one in Slim it seems!
Better get in quick for it!!

      • i still have my big w ones. still strong

      Brand name, that's it.

They last 10 times longer so at 5 times the price its better. Also i think they are more comfortable than the BigW/Kmart ones.

The Beats by Dr.Dre of thongs

nah .. they're more like the sony mdr-v6s (the industry standard for 20+ years) of thongs

Thanks op. Grabbing a pair to wear for shared shower facilities. Particularly gym room showers and hotel accomodation. They'll save me from contracting athlete's foot. I'm assuming these will last longer than the Big W/K-mart fare.

  • Are these as good as Dunlop rubber double pluggers? I have tried non Dunlop thongs before they either have crappy foam soles or the straps fall apart.

    • +3

I definitely suggest you try a pair if you wear thongs a lot.

Their rubber formula is closely guarded secret, which is the reason for the softness of their rubber. It's all rubber as far as I know.

The only thing I've noticed is the quality of cheapest ones have gone downhill a bit in the last few years. However, the ones you pay $25 with the coloured logos are the same quality as the original, so now I tend to go for them.

      • Seriously, if factories in China could reverse engineer 3com network cards 10 years ago, they can reverse engineer these thongs now. Has to be marketing hype.

The only special thing about Havianas is that they charge more so they can afford to use better materials. Simple.

Again, if you wear flip flops, just try a pair. They're only $20…or $12 with this aldi sale. If you don't think it's worth it…you didn't lose out much. But it's still better than forming an opinion on something you haven't tried.

Went to Minto Marketplace recently and one of the front warehouse had Havaianas thongs for $10. Quite a lot of them.

"Havaianas at the price they sell at in every country but Australia"

  • How long do these last?

Reason I ask I have a pair of quicksilver thongs, given to me from an ex which was over 6-7 years ago. Apart from the pattern wearing and a bit worn, they are good. No funny sagging, or breaking. I reckon the mrs will chuck them before I say "they're done"

Also have Colorado thongs. Bought these because they had arch support. Got at least 3.5 years out of them and they sagged/wore

These were about $25 when bought, although colorados were 50% off. I got a pair of quicksilver thongs recently via here for $5 or $6 and I think they will last 6 months of casual around the house use at night. I would risk these at the beach or fishing etc.

  • Just got three pairs in St Kilda but there are not many left

  • I got a pair at Chadstone, Melbourne
