iWork (Keynote, Numbers, Pages) for Free on Any OS X Mavericks Machine

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Just tried this and it works fine. Courtesy of Lifehacker (http://lifehacker.com/get-iwork-for-free-on-any-os-x-maveric…):

"Apple recently introduced a new version of the iWork suite of office productivity apps and announced that all new Mac and iOS devices will get it for free. Well, if you're not purchasing a new Mac but have upgraded to the new OS X Mavericks, you can get in on the action with a simple hack."

1) Quit the App Store app

2) Visit http://mac.softpedia.com/progDownload/Apple-iWork-06-Downloa…

3) Click Download

4) Click External Mirror 1

5) Download and Install the DMG file

6) Open up at least one of the applications and select 30 day trial

7) Wait a few minutes (1-2 min)

8) Open up the App Store app

9) Check the Updates tab and you should see an update for iWork

10) Install updates

11) You will now have two copies of each application (Pages, Keynote, Numbers). Erase the old ones from the iWork folder.

This has been around since Mavericks was released. So while it is old news, yes, unaware OzBargainers could benefit from it. However, it's not a bargain and doesn't belong in the deals section. Post it in the forums.

It works but I had to neg because I think it's theft.

I know it doesn't ask you, doesn't prompt you to get the free full versions added to your account. But their intention was not to give away free copies - it was to ensure people who own the original can get the new version and updates. When Apple was quizzed about it they issued a statement saying that they prefer to believe, against the evidence, that common people aren't thieves.

So, whatever. It's not a bargain. It's the equivalent of asking people to download a torrent of a movie. Which is all well and fine but shouldn't be presented as a bargain.

Very decent of Apple to turn a blind eye on the people using this technique to acquire free copies. This sort of dishonest behaviour should never be condoned, so a neg from me.

Neg from me for the same reason. (and its been posted before and deleted)

      Agreed, unethical

      • So do you think access of Netflix and Hulu should is using VPN is unethical? And Apple ripping off Oz customers is ethical business practice?

No, this is NOT theft. Apple is giving these products away. There have been numerous news stories about this. This is not illegal and it is not piracy. Really, they don't care if you're paying for the software: if you're buying a mac, they win.

      see: http://www.macrumors.com/2013/10/28/ilife-iwork-and-os-x-upd…

However, this may not be a deal, as it will always be free.

That was for new Mac Purchases. If it was intended to be for everyone, they'd set the price to $0 on the Mac App Store.

      • Maybe Apple let the user decide whether to pay for iWork EITHER:

        1. to encourage folks to upgrade to Mqvericks -OR-
        2. to discourage other folks (who can) from working on keygen's or whatever it might take to install such programs without paying for them.

PS Jewish law requires - in the case of farmed food - farmers to leave a corner of each field unharvested, so that nearby poor folks can eat & feed their families.

I know it would be stretching things to suggest that Apple would care about folks who can't afford to buy their software, in this way, but… we can hope.

For a second I thought that the iWork suite was given away free only now.

I'm not going to pass judgement on the ethical implications of this, but for those who can afford it, please buy it. For those who struggle and really need to do it, then I'm not going to pass comment.

Considering the price is very low, I have trouble believing that anyone who buys an Apple computer (a premium purchase in itself) cannot afford this software.

lets not jump to conclusion about people making purchases about apple computers.

i will always remember my first mac was a hand me down, i didnt want to "invest" any money into the machine until i fully understood it and once converted, only then did i buy my first software.

as you know software downloads are linked to apple ID, therefore it isnt impossible to say that someone may be experimenting. of course if you go out to buy a brand new mac and then skimp on a sub $100 software purchase, i say thats pretty low.

    iHack

  • I have heard that the new iWorks suite is considerably crippled, to allow it to be used on iOS devices with the same interface/experience. Can someone confirm this?
I use MS Office 2011 for Mac, and unfortunately, still prefer the single window interface of Office on Windows.

  • Isn't this the same as downloading pirated copy of iWork from torrent sites?

If apple cared about this, they would have disabled the ability to update.

  • regardless of Apple's policy, this is simply unethical.
