Seriously cannot find either of these in stock anywhere except Ebay and they seem ridiculously overpriced. Was hoping to get the 7950 for cheaper than a 280x (can't find these in stock either). Should I just wait till the new year?
Any place having HD 7950 or 7970 in stock?

No. Reason is:
In the last 3 months or so, Bitcoin went up from around $100 USD each to $1000.
This has created a rush to mine other up-and-coming cryptocurrencies like litecoin, and 7 series AMD cards, esp 7870 and 7950, were the best bang-for-buck for these. You can make somewhere in the vicinity of a dollar a day by mining LTC with one of those at the moment, so the card pays for itself eventually, and some think LTC will only go up in value long term.
AMD are only making R7 and R9 series now, so basically no cheap 7xxx cards left :( (they are the same cards really, but more expensive).
Buying an Nvidia is actually better value at the moment I think, but the mining thing may be a bubble. If the crypto$ market crashes again, a bunch of those cards will be selling cheap on ebay, as happened a few years back when GPUs became useless for bitcoin mining.
