Safe N Sound Protecta Plus Child Safety Harness for Booster Seat @ Toys"R"Us $49.98

Updated: below is the company literature on why you should use a harness, however reading the below comments and links, looks like there is substantial evidence to the contrary.

I may be returning my harness! Marked this expired, seems like it would make a better forum topic

Cheapest I've found, normally around $69.00 (baby bunting) these also appear identical to babylove, same parent company?

The Protecta PLUS Harness features a frontal adjuster that allows a parent to thread the harness through the slots of an Expandable Booster Seat or Convertible Booster Seat. This provides a better fit on the child's shoulder all Safe-n-Sound tethered Boosters Seats.

I spent a long time over this option - first trying to find out the difference between the Protecta vs Protecta Plus (Plus supports a heavier child), then whether I needed one at all. In my case, we have the superseded weight based Maxi Rider. I think either Protecta or Protecta Plus would've worked with our model, but in the end after seeing how this harness works with the lap-sash seatbelt and just using the car's seatbelt alone, I ended up skipping the Protecta harness completely.

This was also the cheapest I found, but if you're still on the fence, do your research, consider your child's age, height etc then decide. Do note a new booster is only around $150 or so and uses your car's seat belt (assuming not lap only seatbelt). Whether getting this harness works best with your existing convertible child seat or you wanted to prolong the same child seat for as long as you can (eg not convertible; too early to switch to new booster) may sway you in the end.

A Child Harness is suggested for the use with Booster Seats for improved upper torso support.

    Suggested by who ??

Before buying one of these, be aware these can be unsafe and not recommended

That is correct. The child car seat manufacturers advise against their use.

The video at the top of the page does take a while to load, but is worth the wait.

    • Great link, JV, thanks.

      • Yeah, it's very irresponsible of Baby Bunting and other similar stores to make parents feel guilty if they do not buy one. They obviously make a lot of money by selling these accessories which are not only unnecessary, but can also be very dangerous…

  • Like most of ozbargainers I read it as $50 for a booster seat …not bad…. but they want $50 for a harness

  • Okay I've now investigated further from your comments, from what is see I still though a harness was safer, however one thing I overlooked was it pulling the seat belt up… also do I read it as the harness limits the torso's movement whiles allowing the head to move forward? Looked on my new Babylove Booster (purchased as it has the max CREP rating) and this seat is lacking the the slideguard ( not sure if this is sam as the anti submarine) but it clamps the harness from between the legs to prevent it moving upwards.

Funny thing is the Babylove Booster seat has the cutouts for a slideguard type fitting on the base however does not have one!

I have 2 seats and harnesses I have not fitted yet, not sure what to do, my kids push their shoulders out of their current seatbelts and the elder one can undo it.

What booster to get? Looks like I may return these…

    • How old are the little ones?

    • I bought hi-liner SG as it has 5 star safety and excellent resale value… managed to get one for $120

  • I don't think this harness is unsafe - if used correctly. I guess it's this proviso that can make it dangerous. I also think the more recent child seat changes to be age based rather than weight is along similar reasoning - most parents can't be trusted to look after their own kids. ;)

Is this harness necessary? I think it really depends on the child seat, the seat belt and the child. My view is it's of limited application and can be a pain in practice. Ultimately moving to a proper booster which uses the car's lap sash seat belt is the better way.
