Do you mean 50 inches or centimeters?

Plasma-most people say it has better picture quality
    LED-lower power usage
Smart tvs-have more features and apps installed, good if you don't already have other boxes/game consoles

  • Sorry inch my bad!

So LED is probably the best and if it is a smart TV thats a bonus? I have a nas which I stream most of my stuff from as I dont watch a lot of regular tv unless its footy season

    • Yeah if you mainly just watch TV then led might be the way to go

Someone else will know more about smart tvs but most should have some streaming or something for the nas

If you watch a lot of footy, then go plasma.

      • Love watching footy when its not a home game for us, cheers

      • If you can find a plasma, they're getting increasingly rare in shops.

We have 2 large screens .. 1 plasma and 1 led (LG). The led is much better to watch.. and you can watch it during the day where the plasma needs a darkened room. The plasma is virtually new as it was a wty replacement for one that died. The other plasma was not that good either (both Panasonics).
In the stores the led's look better to me but some people prefer the picture of a plasma.
    Plasmas are cheaper.

My recommendation for a 50-60" set would be a LG LCD/LED. Sharp are very good but can be expensive.
If shopping for something "budget" go for Sonic from JB or Changhong. With budget tvs always take out an extended warranty even though current consumer laws may? cover you. Ext warranties can be thrown in to sweeten the deal or at a very discounted price.

Plasma has been the CRITICS choice for better TV's for a long time (they handle MOTION (SPORTS and GAMES) the best and have better Blacks, but unfortunately major manufactures like Panasonic and Samsung have said that they will no longer produce them as sales have steadily dropped. Plasma uses more power, but its a laughable difference IMO ANYWAY besides I like to watch LOTS of HD and the quality is very important to me.

I have heard SOME users complain that the PLASMA is NOT as BRIGHT as and LCD or LED LCD but I think it comes down to HOW bright your room is and if you watch TV all day, personally my TV is off during the day and turned on about 6 pm after work and I tend to not use it on the weekend till late also as I keep pretty busy, but when ever I have it on I enjoy the spectacular picture.

50 Inch is a good size, I've been running a 50 Inch Panasonic plasma for 4 years and am ready to go 60 Inch next time, the most sales guys I spoke with told me that 55ich is the new standard lol

If you can hold off till about March you usually find that the NEW 2014 Models start coming in so you would usually get a great price for the 2013 version of the same TV but keep in mind that a particular model you may want may no longer be available then.

Smart TV is great IMO you need WIFI obviously and you want to be sure the tv is Wifi included , and Samsung seem to have the best Smart TV interface as per all the sales guys I spoke with, I checked it out and it was pretty cool, my TV doe NOT have it, but my brother got a Good Samsung LED LCD and the whole family thought it was pretty wicked, it has a great interface.

Panasonic have the THP50ST60A 50 Inch plasma, its selling for about $1300 At most Bricks and mortar retailers.
The also have the THP60ST60A 60 inch plasma for about $1800 , this series from Panasonic is highly regarded and
very sought after buy Plasma enthusiasts.

Samsung has the PS60F8500AM 60 Inch Plasma , its a series 8 which is TOP of the line, it has ALL the bells and whistles including the Smart TV its been regarded as the BEST TV of the year buy many critics, it sells for $2500

Check out CNET.COM.AU for (do a google of BEST TVS CNET AUSTRALAI)

Don't know a lot about LCD/ LED LCD as I don't usually look at them, but I do know LED LCD usually gives better blacks, and also try to avoid 100hz if you can

PS I do KNOW that the above mentioned TVS can be gotten for much better pricing from some online sellers, But I rather deal with a department store when buying something so expensive for piece of mind.

Anyway that's my opinion, good luck, be sure to do your homework.
