Bought a 'new' motherboard @MSY was given a reburb

I purchased a 'new' motherboard from MSY last week and when I built the computer, I realized the board they had given me was used.

I bought it back to the store and was given a refund after they had 'checked' the pins of the socket of the used board (as I had put a CPU in the socket)

Just posting here to let others know that they should always double check when purchasing goods that do not have any security seals.

Some tell tale signs how I knew it wasn't 'new'

  • The SATA cables were labelled as ASUS even though the board was a Gigabyte board
  • Manual along with warranty card was missing from the box, some of contents inside the box wasn't packaged
  • The edges of the board where the screws go in had scuff marks indicating it had previously been screwed into a case

I was told that they had accidentally mixed up refurbished stock with new stock.

  • A lot of shops do this.
I once was sold a hard drive that contained somebody's data from ARC Computers (had a LOST.DIR folder in it)
The Good Guys sold me a printer that was used (ink cartridge was unsealed, warranty card missing)
MSY also sold me a motherboard that wasn't sealed (but did appear to be unused)

  • I've bought two video cards and both had been opened and possibly returned (hard to tell but the seal was broken on the anti-static bag). Not much you can do about it other than check the item in store.

  • Do all computer parts have shrink wrap on them ? I've noticed that many of my MSY purchases are missing the shrink wrap.

    • AFAIK most don't. Video cards should have a seal on the box openings, CPUs will have a special AMD/Intel seal, motherboards are generally never sealed (always best to check those before taking the product) and power supplies are generally shrink wrapped.

  • Bought an ASUS motherboard the other day from Ultimo MSY, did notice when I got home that the anti-static bag it was in wasn't sealed (nor was the box sealed). I wasn't sure if they usually are though and it was too far to go back. Everything 'appears' ok so far but who knows if it was returned, and if so, why.

  • A PC shop sold me a refurbed video card. The box was scratched up and had obviously been opened, none of the packets were sealed and, to top it off, the card never worked. After six months of trying to get it to work, I sent it back. The replacement looked brand new.

  • I bought a MSI R7850-1GD5/OC for $59 from MSY online. I really expected not to get it, if it did arrive was certain of a refurb. Was surprised it was unopened and sealed :)
