Vacuum cleaner up to $300

Just moved out on my own and need to get a whole heap of stuff including a vacuum cleaner, microwave and TV.

With the vacuum cleaner I would prefer a Miele or Electrolux, and not fussed if bagged or bagless. Needs to be great on carpet. It would be for a one bedroom and one study place. Budget up to $300.

Anyone seen any good deals? I went around to TGG and Harvey Norman and didn't find anything within budget or that I liked. I missed out on the Miele deal yesterday too :(

  • you should look into the new cordless dysons. im not sure how they would perform on carpet, but on hard flooring theyre awesome.

    • Thanks madmouse.

I borrowed a yellow Dyson (not sure which model) to use on the carpet and it wasn't very good :(

I believe there are probably ones better suited for carpet but looking at the prices for new Dysons it looks like I'm out priced

  • Love our Miele 'Cat and Dog'. In fact we have two, one upstairs one downstairs. We have 3 very messy kids and a dog, we use both vacuum cleaners everyday. Great on both floorboard & carpet. The first one is 10+ years old, still going strong, hence we bought the second one of the same brand. We bought our second one (few months ago) from Aus Appliances http://www.aus-appliances.com.au/ Great price. Free quick delivery, free Miele bags (not generics).
I just checked their website, they have a Compact Cat and Dog, $398 … a little out of your budget, but I highly recommend it.

    • A Miele is definitely on my list! Thanks for your input. I might go for a cheaper model given how good their vacuum cleaners are in general from I've read and heard

  • I'm also looking at the same price point and found the following (which based on reviews are supposed to be good):

    Piranha Sky
Vax Power 6 Base Cyclinder VCP6B2000
    Samsung SC4350
    Nilfisk Bravo
    Samsung Twin Chamber SC4790
    LG VC4918URT
    Nilfisk Action Plus
    Nilfisk Power Allergy
    Vax Zen Pet Cylinder VCZP1600
    Vax Zen Reach Cyclinder VCZR1600
Electrolux Ultracaptic All Floor Multicyclonic ZUC4101AF
    Vax Air base VCABW1500
    Rowenta Silence Force RO8221

    • Wow thanks so much for sharing the list! I would add the Miele S5211 to that but it sounds like they're hard to come by anyway

  • brought this recently.

    good reviews

tried a bunch of them in stores and this was better than the more expensive ones.
got a deal, with steam mop and cordless vac thrown in, also a small brush attachment that just rips and nearly pulls the curtains down.

  • I have narrowed the choice down to:

    Nilfisk Power Allergy
    Miele S 5211
    Rowenta Silence Force RO8221
Electrolux Ultracaptic All Floor Multicyclonic ZUC4101AF

    • Oops, disregard my comment in response to your earlier comment- I see that you've now added the Miele to your list!

The numatic 'henry' vacuums were considered to the best for your buck:

Bagged and they perform extremely well. Last a long time too. Read some of the comments inside the deals to see reviews etc.

I personally own a Vax bagless and couldn't be happier. Got it from godfreys on a deal last year I think.

    Good luck OP.

    • Thanks fryandlaurie.

No issues with yours being bagless?

I wanted to buy a S5211 Miele but Goodguys wouldnt budge on the price. The best they could do was $10 off the current $288 price! Tried multiple stores and none of them would budge. They say its already reduced heaps!

After reading this thread I decided to buy Nilfisk Power Allergy. HN has it on sale for $238 and it comes with 5 year guarantee, to me this is awesome value. Bags are slightly cheaper than Miele too. I managed to find one store in stock and went for a long drive just to buy it but got told only display model available! anyhow long story short, the sales person sold me a Miele S5381 for $320 + $15 for 4 bags. I came home and searched for this model to find its real value but couldn't find a single AU website listing this model. Looks like it was released sometime in 2011 but no idea how much it is worth? probably they sold me very old discontinued model :( HN had the RRP as $500, but who buys it for RRP :)

I would buy Nilfisk instead of the Miele if you ask me because of the 5 year guarantee.

    • Did yours come with a turbohead and HEPA filters?

      • +1

not a turbo head but HEPA yes. It has Active HEPA written on the top of the vacuum. It has the Active HEPA filter, of course the hepa works only if you replace the exhaust filter with the same Active HEPA filter. The Miele replacement bag box comes with the standard Air clean exhaust filter, meaning you will have to purchase the HEPA filter separately or just use the standard Air clean filter. HEPA filter is around $25 from ebay and the manual says to replace it every year…

btw you probably wont need the turbo head. go into a store and ask them to demo a turbo and non-turbo head, i did this and felt the suction from normal head did a good job. I think turbo head is good if you have pets?

        • We ended up with the Miele S 5211 with turbo head and a pack of extra bags for $ 335, ours only comes with standard filters, if we end up needing the HEPA glad to know it's cheap to upgrade

    • I also tried what you did and they wouldn't budge at all.

I saw the Miele S6xxx (don't remember sorry!) at a Harvey Norman and was curious too why I couldn't find it online (except for some UK websites if I recall correctly). Strange. But it's a good price despite being a bit smaller and lesser power than the S5211.

      Is Nilfisk good and reliable?

      • We went to two different stores, one wouldn't budge the other did, it may be due to stock levels. I think the S 6XXX is a black model for $ 249, my wife didn't like it as much as the S 5211 Turbo.

Some Nilfisk models have 5 year warranties

        • Do note the S6xxx model in HN only takes 2.5 Litre bags and its 2000w compared to the S5211 which takes 4.5litre bag and 2200w. Just in case if you dont know. Also got told the S6xxx is a newer release and weighs less.

        • Based on the new Miele brochure, the series S6xxx replaced the S5xxx range
